and many more...

This is definitely an exciting and challenging role, where you would get to work from running online product marketing, manage/building online partners/affiliates, copy-writing of sales copy/email direct mailers etc, as well as do analytical stuff to analyze on traffic, conversion etc.

In all, this role would really provide you a platform to be an online marketing expert!

Message to Fresh Graduates of 2009

This is an article I wrote in JobStreet.com Forum for Career & Education .
----
It's May again, and it is the time when fresh graduates, especially those in public institutions in Malaysia will be hitting the job market. A rough estimation would mean that about 100,000 young and talented workforce will be entering the corporate world (maybe some will be entering the civil service, and that's good!). Some might also decide to further their studies.

Looking at this, my thought would be that in usual years, employers/HR managers will be cheering, because now, they have a lot more talents to tap on. There is a bigger talent pool, that they can rely on.

However for this year, things might be a bit more difficult. I won't say that there won't be any job vacancy. It will be utterly wrong if I say so. There are still a lot of vacancies, but there might be quite a bit fewer than past years. With the talent supply pool stays the same, the competition will only get stiffer. Plus, there might be still some who graduated end of last year/early of this year, or even 1 year ago, who might still be looking for their ideal job. They will be fighting for the same spot as well.

This article is not meant to be an article for me to rant on this, but I hope to constructively share with those who will graduate this year, to really prepare yourself (and for those who will graduate next year or in upcoming years), do prepare as well! Be ready for the challenge!

Some of the tips that I have will be as follow:-
1. Since some of you are still in the midst of final exams or working on your thesis/final projects, do make sure that those are your best efforts. Getting better grade is always a good thing. I won't go into how big the effect of good grades, but it won't harm you having better grades. I am not asking you to just ignore everything and just be a bookworm either.

2. Once you have finished your final exam, do start your job hunt. Start it early! There might be some who will take 3-4 months holiday, to wait for the graduation ceremony, before starting the job search. My advice is that you should have started, and if you haven't, do start now. It is better to be earlier, than later, unless you won't mind being in the job market hunting for it for many months to come. Do remember the tough economic situation that we are facing.

3. Now that you know you have to start your job hunt, you might be wondering what you should be doing. My advice will be for you to prepare your resume. Enhance your resume, and make sure that it doesn't make various mistakes. Do search around other articles within this forum, where there are discussions on common mistakes for resumes . So, look out for those errors. Don't make the same mistakes.

4. Besides resume, do look around for the jobs that you want to apply. Research on the industry, your specialization, and maybe even new opportunities/fields that you want to explore. You are still young, so a lot of opportunities to look around. Don't be too bothered about the long working hours, demanding supervisors, lower pay etc. As a fresh graduate, you ought to learn on the job, and grow professionally and personally. It is about how you can learn from your colleagues, supervisors, and also from your peers.

5. Once you are ready (and hopefully, it is not too long from now), start the actual process of job applications. Using online job boards, like JobStreet.com will be an easy way for you to apply. Do fill up the JobStreet.com template of resume once, and you can use it to apply for all your jobs in your whole life. (Of course, you need to update your resume from time to time). At any moment, there are more than 1,000 jobs for fresh grads. So, grab it before everyone goes for it! You can view the jobs here .

6. Once you apply, do check on the status. You can log onto your jobstreet account, to see whether employers have put you under consideration, or it is still in process. Hopefully, you will get some of the employers to call you up for interview. One of the way to see would be on whether your resumes are viewed (you can know about this when you log into your jobstreet account and look at your application status). If resume view is equal to 0, then it means that you need to enhance on the summary of your resume (using jobstreet template) to attract the employers to view your full resume. If you have some resume views, but not getting any interview, then do enhance your entire resume. Employers check out your resume, but decide not to call you up for interview. If you get some interview opportunities, and can't get the job, then do work on your interview skills.

7. Talking on interview skills, do enhance on it! What's the first question in all interviews? They will most likely ask you to "Introduce yourself". Focus on how you will impress them and highlight your strength when you introduce yourself. It is not about talking on your family, hometown (unless you can use it to strengthen your case on why they should hire you). Talk about specific stuff that gets their attention. And do really research about the company/position, before you go to interview. Be punctual too and be professional. And the last question in interview is always "do you have any question?", and do definitely make sure that you have. That shows your interest and ask intelligent questions. After the interview, don't forget to send the thank you note too. It could be via email, but make sure you do.

Hope that what I wrote here would be of some value to you. Don't forget that it is you, who will decide whether you will get employed or not.

p/s: Oh yeah, I almost miss out on this. Don't forget that all of you are talented people, and you do have talent to showcase to potential employers. So, don't forget to pitch your talent at PitchYourTalent.com . It is the latest job seeker service that we have launched, and as of now, more than 32,000 people have signed up! You can go to the page, and you can see the real current statistic of how many people have already signed up! Do check it out here !

Job Market in Malaysia

Today, New Straits Times carried a few articles that is related to job market.

Read here and here .

-----
KUALA LUMPUR: Unemployment in Malaysia could reach six per cent this year, its highest in more than 20 years, as the economy slows down significantly, economist Datuk Dr Zainal Aznam Yusof said.
But as the economy picks up again, unemployment will fall to four to five per cent in 2010.

The government expects the economy to grow by 3.5 per cent this year, from a targeted 6-6.5 per cent growth last year.

Zainal Aznam believes that the country's gross domestic product would likely experience a severe slowdown to two per cent this year.

"It is a shock to the system and the brunt is on employment."
Malaysia has a working population of 11 million. A six per cent rate translates into 660,000 unemployed people.

"We should brace for a large overhang of unemployed, especially when the graduates enter the job market."

Zainal Aznam, who is a member of the high-level National Economic Council, said retrenchment was anticipated across all sectors of the economy although the bulk would be in export-oriented industries.

"So far, the (monthly) retrenchment is not huge yet, but it is going up," he said.

Most of the laid-off workers in the construction and plantation sectors are expected to be foreigners, while it is the other way around in the services and manufacturing sectors.

The services sector, which is likely to recover fastest from the global slowdown, is expected to cushion the economic slowdown as it provides jobs.

The sub-sectors with potential include financial, tourism, education, health, information communication technology, professional services, construction-related services and manufacturing-related services.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam has said that more than 45,000 factory workers could be temporarily laid off during the Chinese New year period due to a drop in orders.

They have been asked to take paid or unpaid leave for two or three weeks during the festive period.

Human Resources Ministry statistics show that 7,500 workers were laid off between October last year and Jan 14. The number included 2,000 foreigners in various sectors.

Most of the retrenchment was in the manufacturing sector involving local manufacturers and foreign multinationals.

The official unemployment rate for last year is not out yet, but the ministry has said that the number of retrenched workers should be around the previous year's 30,000.

A total of 102 employers had reported to the ministry that they would lay off 4,700 workers between this month and March.

The majority of these workers are in the electrical and electronics sector.

This includes 1,500 Western Digital workers who will be made redundant when the hard-drive disc manufacturer winds down its Sarawak plant by March.

Ministry secretary-general Thomas George, who chairs a committee set up to monitor retrenchment in view of the global slowdown, said retrenchment was at a manageable level.

"It is consistent with the global trend of having leaner and more productive organisations," he said earlier this month.

-----
KUALA LUMPUR: A three-day week may be on the cards for companies and factories if workers and employers agree to shorten operations, Labour director-general Datuk Ismail Abdul Rahim said yesterday.
He said the government's main concern was to ensure minimal job loss and for companies to continue operating.

He said it was necessary for employers to get the consent of workers, who would be paid less if they worked fewer days.

"It is the duty of the department to ensure that workers are adequately protected and, at the same time, companies do not lose out."

He felt that it would be ideal if employers, workers and unions worked together for the good of the nation.
The Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) is of the view that it is better for workers to take a temporary pay cut than to lose their jobs.

"As employers, we do not want to lose our employees and will do our best to retain as many as possible," MEF executive director Shamsuddin Bardan said.

"However, economic conditions are such that we sometimes have no choice but to cut back on employment to keep afloat ."

Since Jan 1, about 10,000 workers had lost their jobs, with more expected to face the axe if the economic situation did not change for the better, he said.

He added that although the United States and Europe were the worst affected by the global crisis, Malaysia would not be spared either as it was a major trading nation and depended a lot on exports to these markets.

The government had proposed that retrenched workers be paid RM500 monthly while waiting for a new job.

They may also be retrained to acquire new skills or improve on existing skills.

However, according to Ismail, the mechanics of the payment and training was still being worked out.

The Malaysian Trades Union Congress has pledged to cooperate with the government and employers to ride out the difficult times.

Its secretary-general, G. Rajasegaran, said all affiliates had been informed to extend their cooperation and maintain industrial harmony.

Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Noraini Ahmad advised workers facing retrenchment or whose companies were folding up to contact the ministry for assistance.

She said the Labour Department would place the names of the affected workers in its Workers Mini Carnival programme.

"We will retrain workers who have been retrenched and give them RM500 each for the duration of their training," she said. -- Bernama

Words of mouth of this launch got spreaded 3 days before the official launch, and more than 4,300 job seekers submitted their resume! This shows that a lot of Malaysians do get affected and am sure the number that would get affected would be much higher.

Please help to spread the words of this site, as your little effort might be able to help your friends in need. Having an extra help by JobStreet.com to specifically target to help those job seekers who are retrenched would be able to help them to come out from the doom days of being retrenched. Do sign up for JobStreet Retrenchment Helpline !

Below is the official press relase by JobStreet.com, the largest recruitment site in South East Asia.

-----
"JobStreet.com has currently launched the JobStreet Retrenchment Helpline service which is aimed at lending a helping hand to those who might be feeling the effects of the recent retrenchments due to the global economic slowdown.

This initiative is born based on JobStreet’s observations on the market situation in Malaysia and around this region. JobStreet has been actively monitoring the current recruitment industry and based on our findings, we have decided to set up the Retrenchment Helpline Service as a pre-emptive measure aimed at protecting the welfare of Malaysian jobseekers.

The JobStreet Retrenchment Helpline is free-of-charge as we want to make the service available to as many people as possible. All they need to do is register, upload their resume and JobStreet’s team of career professionals will categorize them based on their industries. The JobStreet team will also contact the jobseekers who use this service, to further find out what are the core competencies and marketable skills. This is to enable JobStreet to recommend jobs for them.

In line with providing solutions to Malaysian jobseekers in times of economic slowdown, JobStreet will also intensify Resume & Career Clinics. This is an initiative which helps jobseekers write better resumes, gain better understanding of the job market and sharpen their job hunting skills. JobStreet will run Resume & Career Clinic tours in campuses and also on-site in companies.

Jobseekers can also look forward to more career fairs that will cater to a wide range of jobseekers from different backgrounds and needs. JobStreet will also seek to conduct more market surveys, run more career makeover seminars and maintain a close working relationship with the government and HR industries so that together we will be able to provide an efficient recruitment solution for all jobseekers both in good times and difficult times."

About JobStreet.com

JobStreet operates the JobStreet.com (www.jobstreet.com) online recruitment websites presently covering the employment markets in Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, India, Bangladesh and Japan. The Group currently services over 50,000 corporate customers and over 5 million jobseekers. JobStreet is listed on Main Board of Bursa Malaysia Securities (JOBST).

-----
Business Times also covered the press conference yesterday.

Its write-up is as follow here

-----
JOBSTREET.COM (0058) said there were fewer jobs advertised on its online job posting service since the start of the year, suggesting a cautious employment market.

The company, which earns a fee from companies that advertise on its website, said the manufacturing sector seems to be the hardest hit.

Citing the company's Job Outlook Report for the first quarter of 2009, chief operating officer Suresh Thiru said the overall job outlook confidence is challenging.

He said companies will hire fewer new workers in the first three months of this year compared with the same period last year.
From a random selection of about 1,700 JobStreet.com clients that were polled last December, 56 per cent said they would employ fewer in the first quarter of this year.

Only 14 per cent of them said that they would hire more new people in the first quarter compared with 55 per cent in the same period last year.

About 30 per cent said that their hirings would remain more or less the same.

Suresh said if the jobs market continues to worsen, there will be an impact on the company's revenue.

Meanwhile, the company has launched a new service in anticipation of the deteriorating employment market targeted at retrenched workers.

"The JobStreet.com Retrenchment Helpline service is aimed at lending a helping hand to those who might be affected by the recent retrenchment brought about by the global economic slowdown," said its general manager Eric Sito.

He said the helpline is a pre-emptive measure aimed at protecting Malaysian job seekers.

Since the service was posted on its website three days ago, JobStreet.com has received some 4,300 resumes.

During this economic slowdown, the company will intensify its Resume and Career Clinics to help job seekers write better resumes, gain better understanding of the job market and sharpen their job hunting skills.

"This will increase their employability rate in the market," Sito said.

200,000 to 400,000 Expected to Lose Their Jobs in Malaysia

Thanks to Daryl Wong for the news below.

It sounds pretty gloomy. "According to the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF), between 200,000 and 400,000 workers are expected to lose their jobs this year." That's very gloomy.

For those of you who are retrenched and looking for a job in Malaysia, do go to JobStreet.com Retrenchment Helpline .

News below is quoted from Bernama

-----
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 19 (Bernama) -- Aini cuts a forlorn-looking figure as she looked out from the window of her 13th floor apartment at the city’s majestic landmark, the Petronas Twin Towers, here.

Aini who has been working for some years with an international financial institution in the city is worried that soon she might have to pack her bags and head for her home village as news have filtered through that many workers would have to face retrenchment from their jobs or in more polite words, the ‘voluntary separation scheme’ (VSS).

The year 2009 is indeed going to be bleak for many workers like Aini and others in the private sector as the world braces itself for an economic downturn and retrenchment looms ahead. GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS

Many have anticipated that a huge economic crisis would hit the globe in 2009 as the indicators were already there.

According to recent news reports, the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) projected that 25 million workers would lose their jobs amidst the world economic crisis by the year 2010.

OECD that spreads its wings over 30 nations including all the industrialised countries also projected that economic recovery would take place at the end of 2009 and the ensuing year would witness a weak global amplification.

Earlier, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) estimated that the number of those unemployed globally would rise by 20 million, to hit the 210 million mark by the end of 2009.

BLEAK ON THE HOME FRONT

Meanwhile on the home front, the retrenchment scenario is expected to be as bad.

The picture is expected to be as gloomy with more than 4,700 workers expected to lose their jobs within the first three months of this year as employers are expected to be preparing to reduce costs and losses in anticipation of the world economic crisis.

Recent news reports quoted Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam as saying that 102 employers had stated that they would be retrenching their workers in stages from January while according to the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF), between 200,000 and 400,000 workers are expected to lose their jobs this year.

For 1,500 employees of Western Digital (M) Sdn Bhd, Samajaya Free Industrial Zone in Kuching, Sarawak, they were among the early batches of workers to receive the ‘rude shock’ even before the arrival of the year 2009.

The United States-based maker of hard discs had ceased its operations in December 2008, citing the economic downturn as the reason behind the move.

Foreign workers are no exception to this as Dr Subramaniam has been reported as saying that the retrenchment exercise would also see 2,000 foreigners losing their jobs within these two months. LAST RESORT

Dr Subramaniam also expressed his hope that employers would use the retrenchment exercise as a last resort when dealing with the economic downturn.

The minister voiced this wish in his speech at the function to launch the Manual on Workers Retrenchment Management at the Johor Manpower Department in Johor Baharu last month.

He also launched the Workers’ Retrenchment Operations Room that functions worldwide. The help line is 03-88905015/88905016/88905017/88905018 during office hours.

In the mean time, among the early measures to avoid being retrenched are reducing the claims for overtime pay as well as for more off-days and wages.

At the same time, the government is monitoring the situation and hopes that the employers are not taking the opportunity to sack workers by using the economic crisis excuse.

However if there is no way out from the retrenchment exercise, the workers welfare should be taken care of and they should be given the proper compensation and other benefits deemed proper by the country’s labour laws.

Any voluntary or temporary retrenchment scheme should be reported to the Manpower Department at least 30 days before the exercise. FOREIGN WORKERS

"The locals are being retrenched, why not the foreigners".

That could be on the mind of many Malaysians referring to the presence of 1.2 million migrant workers in Malaysia. This represents some 20 percent of the number of workers in this country.

Meanwhile, the Human Resources Ministry is considering to freeze the recruitment of foreign workers. This is seen as a measure to assist the local workers who had lost their jobs including those retrenched from their employment in Singapore.

According to recent news reports, some half million workers including Malaysians are facing the retrenchment exercise in the island republic.

As of November 2008, about 28,000 of the unemployed were registered with the Manpower Department and 6,000 were reported to have found jobs. VARIOUS INCENTIVES

However for those who lost their jobs, this is not the end of the world as the government has announced that it would cooperate with the public and private sectors to provide training programmes for the retrenched workers.

Under these programmes, the retrenched workers would be trained to acquire new skills for jobs in other fields like hospitality, tourism and information communication technology (ICT).

It has been reported that the Cabinet has given its nod for RM100 million allocations for the retraining scheme.

In this aspect the retrenched workers should be bold enough to accept changes and not be too choosy when picking jobs. They should also be willing to venture into other fields like entrepreneurship, as the government provides various incentives in this sector.

Among these are the RM45 million fund provided by the Rural and Regional Development Ministry to produce more cottage industries entrepreneurs for 2009.

In this aspect, the retrenched workers could make 63-year-old Mohammed Chin, named the recipient of the Tunas Mekar Entrepreneur Award 2008 (men’s category) as their model.

Mohammed who became handicapped after an accident has not allowed his disability to prevent him from becoming a successful entrepreneur. -- BERNAMA MMA ZUL CR

"The McKinsey Engagement" Book

Was at MPH this afternoon and managed to browse a couple of books.

One of those is "The McKinsey Engagement". This is the 3rd book in the series of McKinsey trilogy, where the earlier two books are "The McKinsey Way" and "The McKinsey Mind".

Dr. Paul N. Friga authored this book. The book is centered around the "TEAM FOCUS" model, where the 2 words consist of 9 words:-
T - Talk
E - Evaluate
A - Assist
M - Motivate

F - Frame
O - Organize
C - Collect
U - Understand
S - Synthesize

For each one, it gives a few tips (which can be assessed at the last few pages of the books too), with each tip is substantiated by consulting application.

Do check out the book at Amazon or your local book stores.

All these 3 books would be good books for those who are aiming for a Management Consulting life!

Does Education Impart Street Smarts?

When I was surfing online at Changi Airport 12 days ago, I suddenly got an email, entitled "Chen Chow Blog Article" by Kelly Kilpatrick, who wrote to me the following:-

"I'm interested in writing a guest article on your site Chen Chow in order to increase my writing profile. I'm not sure what the process is for submitting an article for your review or if you have certain requirements, but if you're at all interested I'd appreciate you getting back to me, and I can send you an article for you to consider for publication.

I'm planning on writing something related to your existing articles, but if you have something specific in mind just let me know. All I'd ask in return is a by-line with a link pointing back to my site at the bottom of the article."

This is something that I definitely never expect when I start blogging. My blog is not really popular, with just 100+ to 200+ readers a day.

Nevertheless, I respond positively to Kelly and she has responded with an article that she specially written for all of you, my blog readers. Hope that you guys would learn something from it!

Do share the feedback at comments here and also to Kelly. Thanks, Kelly!

The full article is as follow:-
------
Does Education Impart Street Smarts?

What’s the difference between a management graduate fresh out of college with the double advantage of having topped his class and brimming with the confidence and energy that can be attributed only to youth, and a hardened veteran in the field with no Ivy League degree to speak of but with years of experience under his belt? Experience, of course, which, no matter how good your education, is the best teacher. It’s only the most foolish of us who fail to learn valuable lessons from their mistakes, and it was a wise man who said that you don’t live long enough to make enough mistakes to learn from, so you’re a fool if you don’t learn from the mistakes of others as well.

Why then do we bother with an education, if it’s only experience that matters? Experience alone will not work without the sound foundation of a solid education to back it up, which is why the best managers and entrepreneurs are those who bring to the table the lethal combination of a quality degree and years of experience of both failures and successes that have taught them well. Some people call this “street smarts”, the ability to use instinct to make important decisions, to read people well, to play any role that’s demanded of them, to adapt to change like a chameleon, and to handle stressful situations with the flair and calm of a conductor at an concert.

Street smarts come as you grow older, as you work more years in your field, and as you gain in experience. The question most people ask is – can street smarts be taught? Can we give young go-getters the advantage that their older and wiser counterparts have through a different kind of education?

The answer is in the affirmative – yes, street smarts can be acquired through learning, by using experiential learning techniques like case studies and by using role models. Case studies simulate real world problems and test your analytic and problem-solving skills. If you had to deal with Situation A, how best would you do it? Of course, a pretend situation cannot mimic the exact nature of the real world which has various intangible and unforeseen forces acting in real time to change the consequences of your decision, so it’s all about learning to adapt constantly to rapidly changing environments. In fact, a savvy manager is one step ahead with Plan B to implement if Plan A fails, and Plan C to take over if both its predecessors bite the bullet.

As I said at the beginning of this essay, some people learn through their own experience, but the shrewd ones are those that watch others and analyze their actions to see why they fail or succeed, and then mimic the successful ones. So yes, education does impart street smarts, and if you’re smart enough, you get to move to the head of the class pretty soon.

For analyst candidates, the Goldman Sachs recruitment process
reflects the synergies between our different hiring divisions and the
fact that each division seeks many of the same core qualities in
summer candidates globally. As such, your first round interview
will be a Goldman Sachs firmwide interview, rather than a divisional
one.

For associate candidates, the first round interview will be divisionspecific.
You may be selected for first round interviews with up to
two divisions.

In the Asia ex-Japan region, we begin our interview process with a
20-minute preliminary phone interview (firmwide for analysts and
division-specific for associates). Interviews will be conducted by
representatives from one of our Asia offices. The interview will
focus primarily on your overall interest in the region and the
industry, as well as your “fit” with the firm. It is designed to help us
get to know you, and for you to have the opportunity to ask
questions about us. While the interview is more behavioral than
technical in nature you should be prepared to talk about your
interest in the industry and anything on your resume that relates to
it.

Following this round, we will analyze your skills, experiences,
accomplishments and divisional preferences to determine if you
may be a good match for one of our hiring divisions. Selected
candidates will then be invited to participate in a second round
interview. This round of interviews will be division-specific for both
analyst and associate candidates.

During the second round interview, you will meet with additional
representatives from our Asia offices. These interviews will focus
on your suitability for a particular division and will be more technical
in nature. Candidates who are successful in the second round
interview will be invited to participate in final round interviews with
up to two divisions.

While final round interviews will be conducted on a divisional basis,
our interviewers will continue to assess your comfort with the firm’s
culture as well as your interest in Goldman Sachs and the financial
services industry overall.

Both analyst and associate candidates may be selected for an
interview with more than one region: Asia, Japan, Europe or the
US.

FAQs
Is there a separate application deadline for Goldman Sachs
Asia?
Yes. While our recruiting process is global in nature and aims to
be seamless for all candidates, each region conducts their
interview process during varying timeframes.

Through our application system you can preference up to two
divisions and two regions. If you are interested in applying to
multiple regions you should apply by the earlier of the regional
application deadlines. Please submit only one application for
our global opportunities. If you are interested in working in Asia
you must select an Asia office as one of your location
preferences when completing your online application.

The Asia recruiting team will be visiting US cities for interviews
in January and February. Interviews will be conducted on the
following timeline:
􀂉 Application Deadline: November 30th
􀂉 Preliminary Phone Interviews: Late Dec/ Early Jan
􀂉 Divisional Interviews: Mid January
􀂉 Divisional Final Round Interviews: Early February

Where will my interviews be conducted?
If you are successful in the phone interview process you will be
scheduled for an in-person divisional interview with a
representative from one of our Asia offices. This will take place
in a Goldman Sachs office in the United States or we will
arrange this interview by phone or video conference.

What kind of people are you seeking to recruit?
We recruit from all academic backgrounds. Many of our
professionals have traditional finance or business degrees but
we also have people with degrees in the sciences, engineering,
technology, the humanities or the arts. Many of our associates
have worked in different industries prior to business school.
What all candidates have in common is an active interest in our
industry and the financial markets.

Will my interviews with Goldman Sachs Asia be with the
divisions I preference on my online application?
Not necessarily. While you may be considered for the divisions
you select, you may also be invited to interview with a division
you had not preferenced. We have found that our recruitment
process benefits many candidates since they are considered for
all divisions they are suited for, rather than just those that they
had initially selected. We highly encourage you to be openminded
to explore various opportunities within the firm. Our
interviewers can often help to match your skill sets with areas of
our business that you might not have been previously aware of.

Which Asia offices and divisions are offering internship
opportunities?
We have internship opportunities available in most of our offices
in the Asia ex-Japan region. This includes Beijing, Hong Kong,
Mumbai, Seoul, Singapore and Taipei.

Internships are offered in the following divisions and
businesses:
􀂉 Asian Special Situation Group (Securities Division)
􀂉 Corporate Finance
􀂉 Finance
􀂉 Financing Group
􀂉 Global Investment Research
􀂉 Human Capital Management
􀂉 Investment Management (Asset Management & Private
Wealth Management)
􀂉 Legal, Compliance & Management Controls
􀂉 Merchant Banking (Principal Investment Area & Real
Estate Principal Investment Area)
􀂉 Operations
􀂉 Securities (Equities / Fixed Income, Currency &
Commodities)
􀂉 Technology

Is an Asian language required to work in Asia?
While it is not required to speak or write in an Asian language to
work in Asia, such skills may enhance your application. More
importantly, we are looking for candidates who have a
commitment to the region and an understanding of the cultural
differences that make this area of the world a unique place to
live and work.

What is your policy on recruiting graduates who require a
work permit?
All of our hiring decisions are driven by business needs, rather
than whether someone will require immigration permission.
Although we cannot guarantee the outcome of any applications,
we are willing to apply for appropriate work authorization for any
candidates who may require this.

What if I am interested in opportunities in Japan?
Goldman Sachs Japan is participating in 2008 Boston Career
Forum and interviews will be also conducted during the event.
If you wish to have an interview with us, please apply online by
October 5th, 2008. For additional information please contact
recruiting.japan.overseas@gs.com.

E-quire Sdn. Bhd.

Tired of a routine job? Tired of running in a race that limits your potential? Join us; take a shot at being one of our first employees and fulfill your potentials. We are a close-knit group of highly motivated and capable people.

Autodiscounts is a startup formed by a group of highly talented and smart individuals who are currently directors of companies at the forefront of technology. We intend to change the landscape of the service industry through our innovative technologies and implementations.

Stock options are given to those who prove themselves.

Company background
The company was incorporated in January 2008; however it will only begin operations in June 2008. It was started from a business plan which I (Teoh Yew Jin) had to change the service industry in Malaysia by using our technology to provide for the “Long Tail” of many industries in Malaysia.

With the business plan at hand, I sold equity to raise funds for the company to technology companies both here in Malaysia and abroad. The companies are

Simulex Inc, U.S.A. (www.simulexinc.com)
Iknowledge (www.iknowledge.com.my)
CNX Solutions (www.cnx.com.my) (which has been bought over by RedTone)

With solid financial backing of the business plan, I am currently in the midst of recruiting for current and future requirements. The company currently has 3 employees, me (ex-Accenture Malaysia), a CIO (ex-IBM Malaysia), and a Project Manager (ex-Simulex Inc, U.S.A). We are a close group of friends who went to the same school (Purdue University) and thus currently embarking on this start up together.
We are very selective with recruitment as we only want the best. That being said we understand we have to compensate for the best as well but more importantly we want to ensure that going to work everyday is fun and exciting with the people we have on board.

Feel free to send your resume to me at yewjinteoh@hotmail.com
