Got an email on S-Five, Society of Students in Sciences and Social Sciences. It seems to be a new society, which has hope to create a platform for students to share their research ideas with one another. It is an international student research organization.
If you are interested, do check out at here .
----
AIM: To serve as a platform for all students to share their research ideas with each other and the experts in the particular fields.
REQUIREMENTS: Practical experience, along with classroom teaching is required for any student to discover his potential and to enable him to analyze career prospects for himself. An increasing number of students are drifting towards non-academic fields because of lack of guidance, which creates a void in the effective research community. In particular, a decrease in the number of social scientists is seen. This needs to be addressed.
THEORY:
The objective of S-five is to act as a bridge between subject experts and students with similar research inclinations.S-five provides an international network to the students which strives to ease the path of effective research within the student community by providing a diverse knowledge base. With its huge network of students across the globe, S-five aims to host workshops and conferences internationally under expert guidance regularly and hence providing a real research experience to its members with contacts to the professionals and experts throughout the world.
Further, it will publish two research journals at a time, one comprising of undergraduate research papers in sciences and the other in social sciences. After a call-for-paper for different streams is announced, the experts will select a handful to present their papers orally in the forthcoming conference. Thereafter the papers in conference proceedings shall be considered for the E-journals.The journals will consist of sub-sections dedicated to subjects falling under the respective streams. The papers shall be selected for the journal by a selection committee which shall consist of experts in the particular field. The journals will be electronic in format initially and will be released on site, and paper-based for people who wish to subscribe.
*The journal will have a special section, for students who want to propose a particular idea along with an abstract protocol for the same. This will be to bridge the gap between the talented students and the interested faculty with similar research inclinations.
RESULT: A community S-five which unites students internationally with the mentors and researchers providing a guiding light.

Cathay Pacific International Wilderness Experience 2008
Thanks to my blog reader for highlighting this.
-----
Cathay Pacific International Wilderness Experience2008 – The Amanzi World of South Africa
Would you like to learn about the environment in Africa? Would you like to get to know the outdoors with South African and other Asian students?
Cathay Pacific is sponsoring over 40 students aged 16-18 from South Africa and Asia Pacific Rim Countries to attend the Cathay Pacific International Wilderness Experience. The programme will be held in South Africa from 22 to 28 July 2008.
What is the Cathay Pacific International Wilderness Experience?
Cathay Pacific is committed to the communities we serve. We accept our responsibility towards the environment and are very aware that its future depends on the young people who are going to be the decision-makers of the future.
It is in this spirit that Cathay Pacific has sponsored several hundred specially selected young people to participate in the Cathay Pacific International Wilderness Experience since 1994.
This year could be your turn!
Should you be selected, Cathay Pacific will take you to Johannesburg, South Africa, where you will join your South African counterparts for an experience of a lifetime.
There you will have the unique opportunity to make friends with delegates from other countries with cultures very different from your own. You will be exposed to the natural, unspoiled environment and will begin to understand the impact that man has made on the delicate ecological balance of the earth. Through this experience it is hoped that you will take home the messages learnt and apply them in your own life and home country.
The Cathay Pacific International Wilderness Experience widens the horizons and expands the world view of the young people who have taken part. If you would like to join us on this voyage of discovery, if you are keen to raise your self-awareness and self-confidence, if you would like to act as an "Ambassador" for your country/region, then we invite you to apply right away.
Exploring the Amanzi World of South Africa...
The programme will involve lots of water activities this year. It will take place on the Indian Ocean and within the boundaries of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, which still features the rich cultures of both the Tsonga and Zulu-speaking people. Amanzi means water in Zulu.
Delegates will be snorkeling in the Indian Ocean to discover and explore the Reef Eco-system and the importance of its conservation.
You will spend time in the Fishkraals Channels with the Tonga people to learn how to fish and prepare it the Tsonga way. Visiting a Zulu homestead will enable you to discover how Zulu people live, get to know their traditions and the meaning in the clothes they wear.
Take part in Tsonga boat building and race...
Delegates will discover the wonderful systems of the 4 lakes and why this area has been named as a Natural World Heritage Site. Till today, The Tsonga and Zulu-speaking people still maintain the traditional ways in their daily lives, including building their own means of transport to get across the river.
The Tsonga people will demonstrate and teach delegates how to build a Tsonga boat. You will work with your team to make one and have a race down the river in your newly built boat.
Prepare a meal, song and dance...
During the trip, delegates must come prepared to make a meal. You will also be divided into groups to stage a performance that is unique to your own country and culture.
Mapping the world...
Delegates will be given a chance to show the others where they live, the capital city, provinces (if any), hometowns of team members, major nature reserves (if any), major industrial, business, residential and holiday/tourism areas.
Existing environmental problems and opportunities in your own country or region will be discussed in an open debate with other delegates from around the world.
Should your application be successful, minimal preparation is required for the trip but you will benefit a whole load out of it.

World Bank Essay International Essay Competition 2008
Wanted: Your practical ideas!
The World Bank Essay International Essay Competition 2008 was recently launched on 15th January 2008.
The topic for this year is "What can you do to shape the city of your dreams?"
Shaping the City of Your Dreams
In 2007, for the first time in human history, the majority of people in the world, particularly in developing countries, will be living in urban areas. Life in the city is often associated with more opportunities, better access to employment, education, health and other services. Cities are often called engines of economic growth, contributing disproportionately to the national gross domestic product (GDP). They are also centers of innovation, entrepreneurship and investment. But many cities also have a large part of their population living in slums, without essential services such as water, sanitation and energy, and threatened by environmental hazards, violence and social exclusion. As more and more people move from the countryside to the city, and as city populations grow, there is a growing need for solutions to the issues of urban poverty, environment, and urban infrastructure (housing, roads, water, energy etc.).
What can you do to shape the city of your dreams?
Please answer all three questions below:
1) Think about the city you live in. What are the biggest opportunities and challenges for people living there?
2) What needs to be done to transform your city into the city of your dreams?
3) What could be your role, working together with your peers, in shaping the city of your dreams? Please focus on one or two points you mentioned in question 2).
You may use some of the points below to structure your answer:
If you have been personally involved in concrete initiatives, write specifically about your experience:
Who have you worked with? Who have you helped? What have you accomplished? In what way would you consider this work to be innovative? How have you measured the results of your work?
Looking ahead:
How would you expand or improve the impact of your work? How can other youth replicate your experience?
If you don't have practical experience, write specifically about your ideas:
How would you work with your peers to shape the city of your dreams?
Students aged between 18-24 are invited to take part in the competition.
The deadline for submissions is 23rd March 2008.
Prizes up to $5,000 for the grand prize winner are up for grabs.
