JobStreet.com Employee Confidence Index Dropped for November 2008

Has financial crisis emerged already? How do Malaysians react to our current economic slowdown? Does it affect the job market? Does it affect our job seekers' confidence?

Based on the JobStreet.com Employee Confidence Index for November 2008, it dips to 47.6, from 49.6 in October 2008. This index level is the lowest in the last 2 years, but compared to the Dotcom bust time, currently, the index is still much higher than about 30 during those time.

For the graph of JobStreet.com Employee Confidence Index in Malaysia, do refer to here .

Some of you might be wondering how is the situation in Singapore. It is not as merry over there. The index has dropped to 43.2 in November 2008, compared to 46.8 in October. Just a few months back, say in July 2008, the index was 53.5, so it has dropped more than 10 points in the last 4 months.

YTL Power bought Power Seraya Ltd for S$3.8 Billion

YTL Power has shown its mettle during this financial crisis, when it spent a hefty S$3.8 Billion (RM9.1 Billion) to purchase for the stake of Power Seraya Ltd from Temasek Holdings. This power plant produces about 25% of the total energy needed in Singapore.

This definitely shows YTL ability in making essential investment during down town. They had just bought significant stake in REIT that holds Ngee Ann City and Wisma Atria in Orchard Road.

For more details, go to NST

-----
SINGAPORE, Tues:

Temasek Holdings today announced that it had sold the third and last power generation company in its stable, PowerSeraya Ltd, to Malaysia's leading power company YTL Power International Bhd for S$3.8 billion.

The company said it had signed a share purchase agreement this evening with Sabre Energy Industries Pte Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of YTL Power International for the 100 per cent sale of its wholly-owned PowerSeraya Ltd.

Sabre Energy will pay S$3.6 billion in aggregate consideration and assume S$201 million of adjusted net debt of PowerSeraya Ltd as at March 31 of this year.

The transaction is expected to be completed by early next year, Temasek Investment Director Gwendel Tung said in a statement tonight.

Last week, Tung announced that Temasek had stopped the tender process for the sale of the power generation company in light of the market conditions then.

“After we stopped the tender process last week, YTL Power International put forward an unsolicited proposal which met our requirements,” she said.

“We are pleased with the successful outcome of the PowerSeraya divestment,” Tung said, adding that YTL Power International was an established industry player with a strong track record in power investments, both in Malaysia and internationally.

She said Temasek was confident that YTL's expertise and experience would add significant value to Singapore’s electricity market and PowerSeraya in particular.

Commenting on the acquisition, YTL Power managing director Tan Sri Francis Yeoh said the company was glad to have had the opportunity to acquire PowerSeraya.

“The 3,100 megawatts power station operated by PowerSeraya will give us significant participation in the Singapore energy market.

“Its attraction lies both in its strong position in the energy market and its complementary multi-utility business,” he said.

Yeoh said YTL Power, through its wholly owned subsidiary, Wessex Water in the UK, had considerable expertise in the water sector and the acquisition of PowerSeraya would enable YTL to grow its utility business in the region.

Temasek had earlier sold its two other power generation companies - Senoko Power Ltd and Tuas Power Ltd - under its divestment plan announced in July last year. — BERNAMA

Check Out Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School

Sally, who is a first year student at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School. She graduated from Duke University with a bachelor degree in biology in 2007 and chose to attend Duke-NUS because of the curriculum and the financial aid package that they offer to international students. This is a truly unique opportunity for those who are considering medicine after a first or second degree.

She is helping her school with admissions and she thought that this school would interest a number of Malaysian students, especially those who have completed a BS, BA, master or PhD and are thinking about entering medicine now.

For those of you who would like to contact her, please just drop me a message/email and I'll link you up with her.

You can visit Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School here too!

Below are more information that she had shared with me.

----
Dear Students,

As you consider your medical school options, let me take this opportunity to suggest that attending Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School could be one of these exciting possibilities. The newest of the National University of Singapore’s graduate schools, and the first American-model medical school in Singapore, Duke-NUS is the brainchild of Duke University School of Medicine, NUS and the Singapore government. The Times Higher Education rankings places NUS in the top 30 universities world wide and one of the leading universities in Asia. At Duke-NUS, we seek outstanding individuals with strong passion for medicine and dedication to scientific learning to become physicians, physician scientists, and academic physicians. You could be one of them. Our class would be enriched by the perspective you have to offer as an international student.

Why come to Duke-NUS?

Using innovative team-based learning methods and Duke's distinctive integrated curriculum, our rigorous four-year Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) program prepares students for entry to the medical profession. With Duke as the key education partner to NUS, we are privileged to be at the center of knowledge exchange between two prestigious universities. By the time next year’s class matriculates here next August, we will have moved into our new campus at Outram, with its impressive on-site research facilities and proximity to the clinical infrastructure at Singapore General Hospital (SGH). SGH is the largest tertiary care medical center in Singapore and is a highly rated, JCI approved facility. Additionally, our research-focused education will appeal to those who see themselves becoming both medical practitioners able to care for patients and physician-scientists engaged in biomedical research.

These considerations aside, what is most important about Duke-NUS is the superlative quality of the students themselves, and the opportunities for each person’s professional and intellectual formation. With only 50 students in each cohort, each student is assured of faculty attention and ample access to educational resources. Our emphasis on learning in teams helps foster strong relationships in an already close student community. Duke-NUS is also a school with a strong global character. This year’s class includes students from 13 countries. To give you a quick peek at some of the achievements and new happenings at our school, we are sending a copy of our most recent newsletter, Vital Science.

A note about Admissions

Applications for the school year beginning August 2009 are open until 1st December. We invite you to visit our website to learn about our school, our curriculum, the admissions requirements, and, if you are interested, to begin the online application process.

We look forward to your application. Join us in 2009!

Best regards,

Dr. Stenberg
Associate Dean, Student Affairs and Admissions

What is Duke-NUS?

Duke-NUS, or the Duke-National University of Singapore Graduate Medical School, is an innovative new medical school in Singapore co-founded in 2005 by Duke University and the National University of Singapore. The school offers students from around the world the singular opportunity of receiving an American-style medical education while studying in one of Asia's most vibrant centers of biomedical research.

At Duke-NUS, students pursue the same rigorous, research-focused curriculum pioneered by Duke University School of Medicine. To this curriculum, moreover, Duke-NUS has added its own distinctive emphasis on Team Based Learning (Team Duke-NUS) as the primary mode of instruction. In the third year, mentored by distinguished researchers, Duke-NUS students undertake independent research projects. In their clerkship years, they care for patients in leading Singapore teaching hospitals under the guidance of dedicated clinical faculty.

Duke-NUS aims to prepare outstanding physicians and physician-scientists for careers in biomedical research, academic medicine, and patient care.

Graduates will receive an MD degree jointly conferred by Duke University and the National University of Singapore.

How do I apply to Duke-NUS?

Duke-NUS and Duke School of Medicine are closely affiliated, but the two schools have independent admissions processes. As Duke-NUS does not participate in AMCAS, you will need to complete an online application at the Duke-NUS application portal. The good news is that we do not charge an application fee.

We encourage interested students to visit the Duke-NUS Admissions website for more details about the application process and admissions requirements. Duke-NUS has a rolling admissions policy. Prospective students are strongly encouraged to submit applications as early as possible, in any case no later than December 1st of each year.

Are International students welcome to apply?
Certainly! We welcome applications from qualified applicants of all nationalities, and there is no quota on the number of international students we accept. They are also eligible for financial aid.

Will I need to interview in Singapore?
Interviews will be held at various locations in the US (Duke is one of those locations), as well as in Singapore. If you are shortlisted, the Admissions office will contact you with information about interview locations. Students who are able to attend an Applicant Day will be able to participate in a Team Duke-NUS session where they will have the opportunity to experience for themselves the distinctive educational methods of Duke-NUS. We encourage any students who are admitted to come for a visit to Singapore.

How will the final disposition of my application at one school affect the other?
Admissions decisions for Duke and Duke-NUS are made independently. The outcome of your application at one school in no way prejudices your application at the other. Please be aware that Duke-NUS has a rolling admissions policy, so a student who has agreed to matriculate at Duke–NUS is expected to withdraw from any other schools they have applied to.

Is there an MD/PhD program?
Yes, there is. Students do not apply directly to the MD/PhD program but must be admitted to the MD program first through the normal application process. They may apply for entry to the MD/PhD program at the end of their second year, and if offered a place will commence with PhD research from their third year onwards. After completion of the PhD requirements (typically 4 years) students will continue with the final year of MD training.

To learn about the MD/PhD program at Duke-NUS, please visit our website here .

What are the requirements after graduation?
Upon finishing the MD degree, Duke-NUS graduates must complete a one-year internship at a Singapore public hospital to fulfill the requirements for Medical Registration (Licensure). Thereafter, in return for the tuition subsidy provided by the Singapore government, all Duke-NUS graduates are expected to fulfill a Service Commitment (SC) with the Singapore Ministry of Health (MOH). Duke-NUS graduates may satisfy the Service Commitment requirement by serving their residencies in Singapore’s public hospitals or by taking research positions in biomedical research facilities affiliated with MOH or the Singapore government. This commitment lasts for four years for Singapore citizens and five years for international students and Singapore permanent residents. Graduates will be paid during the one-year internship and the period of service commitment. MOH has also indicated that a select group of outstanding students may be able to complete their residencies in the US before returning to Singapore to complete their SCs.

I’m interested! Where can I learn more about the school?
The best place to start learning more about the school is here.

Singaporean who made it to Princeton after failed to enter NUS 4 times

Thanks a lot to Chern Han from Princeton for sharing me this article. Wah Guan cited in this article is his friend over at Princeton and in fact, he mentioned that the person who took this photo was his roommate last year.

This is regarding a Singaporean, Wan Guan, who made 4 attempts to enter NUS Art Stream, but he didin't get in. He didn't manage to do well in A Level, after attempting interesting combination of subjects. He is not the usual time of Singaporeans who would take the typical combination and do well in O Level, A Level and then get a good place for degree.

After Wah Guan's failure to get into NUS, he went to University of New South Wales to study in Chinese and Theatre Studies, before he went to Oxford for his Master in Chinese Studies and now at Princeton doing PhD in East Asian Studies.

So, questions have been raised on whether Singapore Education System caters to such kind of talent. And I would like to pose similar question to my blog readers too. Is Malaysia ready to cater our education system towards such kind of people? Would our university admission system allows such people to bloom? Would our scholarship be open to people who have surpassed the normal age?

What are the resources that could be put in to support such kind of people? I know that Wawasan Open University, UNITAR in a way caters to such people.

I'll leave it for your thoughts.

The full article is quoted from The Electric New Paper

-----
HE has walked the same cobblestones as JRR Tolkien, Margaret Thatcher, Steve Forbes and Bill Clinton.

Mr Lim Wah Guan, 28, belongs to a rare breed of Singaporeans to have studied at two of the world's most prestigious universities - Oxford and Princeton.

Last year, Mr Lim, a happy-go-lucky chap with a hoot of a laugh, completed his master's degree at Oxford in the UK. He is now a PhD student at Princeton in the US.

However, he did not take the usual Singaporean route to the hallowed hallways of these premier institutions.

He does not hold a prestigious scholarship. He is not a 'GEPer' (someone from the Gifted Education Programme). He does not even, well, come from a top junior college.

Mr Lim is, in his own words, an 'NUS reject'.

He had to retake his A-level examination, after getting C, E and O grades for Mathematics C, Higher Chinese and History respectively. The second time round, he got B, D and D.

Four times, he applied for a spot at the arts faculty at the National University of Singapore (NUS) - and failed

Somewhere inside him was a hidden talent, one that was enough for the pinnacle of academia. But for a long while, that talent was undiscovered, not nurtured, and in danger of being lost forever.

Recently, Education Minister Ng Eng Hen said that it was time for Singapore's education system to evolve, to recognise students who learn in different ways.

Shortly afterwards, The New Paper columnist Reggie J raised the question of identifying the 'Churchills' in our midst - students who do not do well at their O and A levels, but who excel subsequently.

Mr Lim seems to be a 'Churchill'.

Initially, he did well in school, scoring 252 for his Primary School Leaving Examination, and 12 points for his O-level exam. But those were mostly for maths and science subjects.

It was in junior college, when Mr Lim pursued his interest in the humanities, specifically theatre, history and Chinese literature, that his grades started to slide.

At National Junior College, he was the only one in his cohort with a combination of Mathematics C, Higher Chinese and History, and spent his years there like a nomad, moving from class to class for the lessons.

His Chinese teacher, Mr Ng Thian Lye, said: 'He knew what his interests were at a young age. Not many students can say the same. Most students just followed the science stream without much thinking.'

Somehow, Mr Lim's passion did not translate into aces. After his first attempt at the A-level exam, his relatives encouraged him to switch to the science stream because they thought 'it was easier to score well in it'.

Mr Lim struggled with this dilemma but deep down, he believed his goal - a spot at the arts faculty at NUS - was attainable.

'The arts faculty was a place people criticised as a 'dumping ground'. It didn't matter to me, but I thought I would at least be able to make it to such a place,' he said.

Harsh reality

His idealism met with harsh reality when, a year later, Mr Lim's improved grades still proved insufficient.

He said: 'Looking back, it was ironic that I got the best grade both times for mathematics, the subject I had the least interest in. But I think it was because it was the subject which lent itself best to exams.'

Mr Lim applied to NUS four times, the final time with an appeal letter from his Member of Parliament.

'I was still trying to find my way back into the system,' he said. 'In Singapore, if you're not in the system, you aren't anything at all.'

He could not help but look at his peers.

One of them, he remembered, was a straight-A student who had never heard of the Quran.

'I could not understand why this was happening to me,' he said. 'I asked myself, was I really inferior to them?'

Mr Lim's mother, Madam Lily Soon, 57, said: 'He doesn't learn well in a classroom and we were beginning to think that the Singapore system isn't best suited for him.'

Still, when Mr Lim eventually decided to apply for the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia, his decision broke his mother's heart. It was a tough decision then but today, Mr Lim jokingly describes his time at UNSW as when 'I turned into Cinderella'.

Four years after his rejection from NUS, Mr Lim graduated from UNSW near the top of his cohort with a first class honours in Chinese and Theatre Studies.

In a referral letter, his supervisor, Dr Jon Kowallis, wrote that Mr Lim 'is truly a unique student of the calibre that one comes across once every 10 or 15 years'.

Another, written by his Dean of Residents, Dr James Pietsch, said: '...it is not on the basis of his grades that I wish to recommend him for a postgraduate program - there are many residents here who can boast high grades.

'However, Wah Guan stands apart in terms of his attitude to his study. Wah Guan has an intellectual inquisitiveness... (he is) not driven by grades or competition, but by a genuine desire to learn.'

Still, his glowing report card was muted by personal pain. In 2003, his parents' business was hard-hit by the economic recession and a guilt-ridden Mr Lim forced himself to accelerate his study course to save money.

During his time abroad, he also missed the funerals of his grandmother and primary school teacher to whom he was very close.

There continued to be times when he saw himself as an 'NUS reject'. 'It was a huge mental block I needed to overcome,' he said.

At Oxford, Mr Lim completed a master's in Chinese Studies, focusing on the work of Gao Xingjian, the first Chinese recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, and made it into the East Asian Studies PhD programme at Princeton University a year later.

His academic adviser, Professor Perry Link, praised Mr Lim as 'better than the average among graduate students at Princeton - which is an extremely elite group.'

Usually eloquent, Mr Lim was stumped when asked just how exactly he made good.

'I just don't think a three-hour exam is the best way to test any student's ability' was what he finally said.

Does he plan to return to Singapore? Will he turn his back on a system that rejected him?

It is another question that vexes him. He misses home terribly, but it is evident he has not gotten over the disappointment. He will only say for now - maybe.

What you missed in January…

Review by Shawn Tripp, VP Membership

The Cornell Club had a great outing to try out the new Brewerkz Bar and Grill, and then watch the Singapore Slingers vs the Cairns Taipans at the Indoor Stadium. Really tasty pizza and beer was followed by an exciting game that saw the Sligners lead all the way until it mattered, losing a close one at the end.

'Relishing' Gourmet Burgers

After the formal dining of the Chinese New Year and Valentine's, it seems appropriate to just chill out for a burger and beer on a breezy Friday evening.

Join the Restaurant Club at Relish this February where the manager has arranged for us to enjoy their best burgers and gourmet beers at a great price. This burger joint belonging to the same owner of Wild Rocket at Mt Emily and Wild Oats has gotten some rave reviews since its opening barely a few months ago. Are they worthy of the rave reviews? Seems like something Cornell should decide.
