TeAM Talk by Mark Chang, CEO of JobStreet.com

Live blogging from PappaRich at Telawi area with Mark Chang, CEO of JobStreet.com sharing at Technopreneur Association of Malaysia (TeAM) talk.

Mark highlighted that his journey started back in 1995. Mark would like to thank Mr. Siva for starting this initiative back then, and during that time, there would be a small group of 10-12 people who would be gathering and learning from each other, especially on technopreneurship. And along the way, everyone learned and grew in this area.

Now, 11 years later, Mr. Siva is still running the group and Mark really respected his efforts in nurturing entrepreneurship among the young entrepreneurs. Mark hope that in 5-10 years later, some of the people in this audience would be back to share on their entrepreneurship stories.

Mark thanked Chok Kwee Bee from Walden International, who was the initial investor for JobStreet.com. Mark highlighted that if anyone has anything to learn on getting funding, can definitely learn from her.

Mark commented that in this internet age, people can utilize Facebook or Twitter to connect to each other and know each other.

Mark started by sharing on his background. He was working in Perlis back in 1990, and it was not long after Communist surrendered. Perlis is quite a rural place, and Mark wanted to learn more about people, so he went there. But it is a very quiet place, and by 8:30pm, Kangar is quite dark and not many places are opened. Perhaps only the shopping center was open. So, Mark spent a lot of his time either working or learning on his own. Then when internet started, Mark was dying to tap on the power of internet.

At that time, internet was just starting, and most people just started with emails, and then internet browser started to be used. There was an attempt back in around 1993, where they tried to install sound in browser.

During that time, there was a group of internet enthusiasts in Penang who would meet up once a week. Mark started using internet back in 1992-93, when it was the days of Yahoo! and Netscape.

As there wasn't much to do in Perlis, Mark often worked 16 hours a day, so technically he worked for 10 years, instead of the 5 years that he actually worked. Then, Mark got the blessing of his supervisor to leave and try his hands on starting an internet business. Mark asked whether he could come back and work in the company in the future, just in case his venture didn't work.

Back then, Yahoo! was the popular one, and Mark was trying to build a Yahoo! of Malaysia. Mark remembered that during his students' days abroad, to get the news from Malaysia, it would be from Malaysian Embassy and it was about 1 month late. So, Mark tried to summarize the news in Malaysia and updated in the website.

So, it got very popular with the students abroad. And later on, the newspaper started to have their websites, and wrote to Mark that he cannot lift news from them. Mark also put up musics, like those from P. Ramlee for Malaysians abroad to listen as well.

As it progressed, Mark asked on what else the students abroad would need. At that time, the students need to get jobs, and it was almost impossible for them to know about job opportunities back home, when they were abroad. So, Mark started to get jobs from newspaper and then posted it online. Soon, Mark realized that he cannot continue to lift the jobs from newspaper, so he started to approach the companies. The 1st company that he approached was Intel.

At that time, Intel also wanted to hire Malaysians before they came back home, in the semiconductor boom. Intel put up 5 advertisements then, and after a couple of weeks, Mark checked with them, and there were only a few applicants, and they didn't manage to hire. Mark thought that it would be the end of his venture, but Intel gave him more job advertisements and soon more and more multi-national companies in Penang put up ads through Mark. After all, it was much cheaper compared to newspaper and it was very hard to get talent.

It was a good start. Back in 1995, there was an election in Malaysia too and Mark felt that it would be good to provide the news to the students. Mark had a bandwidth of 9.6 kbps, whereas his modem was 2.4 kbps. Mark would announce the news of the election to the Malaysians abroad, with the help of 2 students. One of the students would go to business center next door and watched the TV and jotted the results and came back to update it.

One of the hottest seats was Lim Kit Siang vs Koh Tsu Koon, and everyone wanted to know the results. By midnight, the modem light kept on blinking and Mark could no longer key in more results, as there was too much load. So, he had to disconnect the line and then keyed in the results and then connected back the line.

Mark said that a lot of things would not be as planned. A lot of things would have to be trial and error. Mark said that a lot of successful entrepreneurs are not super smart, but it was just that they are working very hard and keeping on trying very hard. And it is very important not to give up.

And from there, JobStreet.com got more and more popular, and a lot of the users were computer science students, as it was mostly computer-related jobs. And soon, more and more university students started to use JobStreet.com . Initially, the ratio of male vs female was 95:5, and soon it became 55:45, and Mark was very happy to see the ratio balanced up, as JobStreet.com became more and more accepted by people and became a mass market product.

Gradually, JobStreet.com was spreaded to Kuala Lumpur and Johor etc, from its initial base of Penang.

Mark said that he was a technical person. He didn't know about some of the other stuff, like how to comply with the law, without the support and guidance of others. Mark talked about having to line up to pay the electric bill etc. If he didn't do any of the task, it won't be done. Back then, there was only a handful of staff. At that time, anyone with working experience would not join JobStreet.com . So, a lot of those who joined were fresh graduates, who might be inexperienced. So, Mark rallied the team to try and made it work. Mark shared about many things that he didn't know, for instance how to pay commission and had to discuss with his staff on that.

In1998-99, Malaysia went through economic downturn. There was a reporter from Far East Economic Review, who wanted to interview Mark. Mark shared his story and the employment market. When the article was published, it ended up becoming an article on JobStreet.com , and the reporter put JobStreet.com in a very good light. Mark started to receive calls from venture capitalists. At that time, Mark didn't even know what is Venture Capital. He even got contacted by VCs from Japan.

Soon, Mark took up VC money and advice from VC in Singapore - Walden International. Before that, Mark didn't have the ambition of JobStreet.com become a big company. It was more of an expectation of a lifestyle business, where Mark could go to coffee shop during office hour and drank coffee with his friends. Mark asked two of his classmates whether they wanted to be partner, by asking them to put RM15,000 each. So, from day 1, Mark only have 1/3 of the company, as each of them had 1/3 of the company. They helped Mark along the way with quite a bit of things.

VCs went through the plan and advised Mark on what to do. JobStreet.com got SGD3 Million in 1999 from Walden, and expanded very fast. During that time, Malek Ali joined JobStreet.com . When Mark started the company, it was called Malaysia Online, and after that, JobStreet.com was spun off, and Mark focused on JobStreet.com .

Mark shared that coming up company names would be difficult. Financial center is called Wall Street, so Mark would call job center as JobStreet. By the year of 2000, JobStreet.com has already raised some money and Mark, Malek and Kay Yip was invited to Hong Kong to present JobStreet.com story and Malek presented at a Merrill Lynch conference to some high net worth people. A gentlemen walked up to Mark and said he was interested in the company. That person was Vincent Tan. JobStreet.com at that time was fully invested, and Mark said that Malaysia Online could possibly be available. So, Vincent Tan and JobStreet.com talked on MOL back then.

McAfee back then talked to Mark on possibly getting MOL, as McAffe's name was tough to be spelt. Another potential buyer was Microsoft. Mark felt that it would be better to sell off to Vincent Tan, as it would be a Malaysian company. Mark talked to the CEO of MOL at that time too.

The CEO of MOL showed Mark the ideas of MOL, and Mark was asking himself why he didn't think of the ideas. So, Mark bought quite a bit of MOL share at RM7, and eventually it dropped off to RM0.70 . So, Mark pointed out that he did make mistakes along the way.

With the VC money, JobStreet.com gradually expanded.

Now, everyone sees Mark as the CEO of a Multi-National Company, but back then, he was a programmer, and the first person he hired was a salesperson. Then, Mark had to become sales manager, and it was tough. Then, Mark had to soon hire an external sales manager. So, it was a tough decision, as he felt that it would be tough to hire from internally, as they might not be ready to do the job as sales manager. Eventually, Mark brought in someone from outside as sales manager.

Mark then became program manager, and slowly moved one level by one level up the organization. Mark had to consistently read up books to learn the new job scope. Mark had no finance background, and he just had to learn from scratch. Back then, everything was done in cash, as Mark didn't know about accounting. So, that was a simple way to move forward back then.

Mark gradually learned to become CEO of a public listed company and then CEO of a multinational company. Mark back in 2000, actually went out to try and hire a new CEO, as part of the agreement with the VC. But eventually the CEO didn't join and Mark became the temporary CEO, and today, he is still the CEO. During that time, he agreed with VC that he would be the Executive Director.

Mark said that in a new business, it would be tough to come up with a business plan, as there was nothing to copy from. Mark said that in budget planning, expenses would usually happen, but revenue may not really happen. So, it was like a water tap, where water may not flow out, even when the tap is opened.

So, Mark and the team bootstrapped along the way. And with the SGD3 million that Walden provided JobStreet.com, he didn't know how to spend it, as he never handled that much money. Luckily, the money was not spent, and when dot com bust came, the money saved JobStreet.com .

In 2004, JobStreet.com got listed in MESDAQ and more and more companies wanted to advertise at JobStreet.com and more companies would like to be partner with JobStreet.com as well.

When JobStreet.com was listed in 2004, it was already 9 years that Mark had worked on it. During the ceremony of IPO listing, Mark really didn't felt anything special. At that time, the price of listing was 0.54, and it quickly went up beyond 1.00 . Mark reflected back that he always told his staff that they had to work very hard, as it was not good enough, but when it was accepted and valued by the public, it meant a lot to Mark, that JobStreet.com is good in the eyes of the public.

A lot of staff who had been around with Mark since back then, they had now become quite successful, for instance some have become entrepreneurs or mothers. Mark commented on some of those early staff, for example See Ming, who played a good part in making JobStreet.com successful.

Mark got the invitation from the son of Robert Murdoch, who was interested to invest in the company in the year of 2000. So, during Olympics Games in 2000, Mark was invited there with his wife, and they were given business class tickets to go over. Mark stayed at a hotel that everything was paid for, and he was provided with the box seat to watch any games in the Olympics Games. Mark didn't know that there would be separate entrance to the stadium, as well as box office, where food was served and they watched in the comfort.

Mark didn't know anyone there, so he just approached people, and when the people told him their names, Mark would ask them what they were doing. Some of them could be quite famous in Australia, but Mark didn't know of their background.

Mark said that there would be a lot of difficulties along the way. Mark said that he tried to explain to his mother and grandmother about his business, but they never understood. Once Mark's grandmother went to office, and she wanted to see the physical stock of the companies, and Mark didn't have anything to show (as it was internet business), and his grandmother thought that he was running a scam business!

Mark was lucky to have a lot of good partners, like Malek, Suresh, Albert and Greg. Mark focused outside Malaysia, and let them run the business. Mark was focusing on Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and Seek (Australia). Mark moved himself to Singapore for private and business reasons. Being there, Mark can talk more easily to more business analysts.

Today, JobStreet.com owned about 10% in Recruit Holdings in Hong Kong, and in the last few years, Recruit made quite a bit of money printing airline magazines in China. And indirectly, Jobstreet.com owned 10% of those large printing plants. JobStreet.com also owned close to 20% of 104 Corporations in Taiwan, and at one point, 104 Corporations made more money in one country than the entire JobStreet.com . JobStreet.com also owned some stakes at Innity and AsiaTravel.com .AsiaTravel.com is one of the largest hotel booking websites in Hong Kong. Each day, they booked more than 2,000 rooms and they had good margin from booking the rooms.

Mark said that as JobStreet.com grows, it has become more of a utility company, and some companies even banned their staff from accessing JobStreet.com at office, as their staff may leave if they found jobs there. Mark asked those future entrepreneurs to not ban their staff from accessing JobStreet.com, as the staff would have ways to do that, if they want.

Mark shared on him meeting Thomas from Brazil, who was helming Catho. Mark talked to Thomas, and Thomas said that Mark could just write a USD40 Million cheque and he would sell the whole company to Mark, and he would work for Mark for 5 years to make sure that everything was fine. However, JobStreet.com did not have USD40 Million for it. Mark came back to Malaysia/Singapore to try and raise money, but was not successful.

And a couple of years later, Catho was sold for USD40 Million to Seek for 40% of the stake, and what Mark was offered earlier was 100%.

Mark also said that sometimes time may not be right for things to happen.

In the Q&A session, Mark was asked on what he would do differently for JobStreet.com . Mark said that hindsight is 20-20, so it is easy for us to look back and comment, but being in the midst of it, it would be tough.

Mark highlighted that in the early days, he didn't know much about the concept of market share. So, he tried to focus on bringing in revenues, whereas his main competitor tried to build market share by giving some of the advertisements free. And eventually, the main competitor built up quite a bit of market share.

Mark highlighted that he was competing with a competitor who had sold a company to Li Ka-Shing, which eventually became a huge conglomerate in Hong Kong.

However, Mark said that ignorance could be a blessing sometimes, as they would just keep on fighting hard against the competition, without really knowing that they were huge giants and ended up giving up.

On the issue of job seekers vs employers, Mark said that "job seeker is king". Mark believed that if job seekers' needs are taken care of, they would be using the portal to apply for jobs, and with that, it would served the needs of employers.

Mark talked about quite a number of companies thought that online job board would be a good business to go in, and many had tried to start a job site. However, many of them failed. Mark said that it is a tough business, and if he was to start again, he won't do another job site.

Mark highlighted that he has about 60 programmers now building tools to serve the employers and job seekers. For instance, there is interview scheduler, which helped companies to arrange for interviews, and job seekers would be reminded of the interview and they can respond to it, informing employers about their attending of the interview. In terms of codes, there are millions of lines too.

So, to start from scratch, it would be tough. Moreover, currently, JobStreet.com has close to 1.5 Million job seekrs in Malaysia. For companies, if they were to consider spending a couple of hundred Ringgit more advertising at JobStreet.com versus lesser known job sites which is slightly cheaper, they would rather spend the money advertising at JobStreet.com, to get more quality candidates, as if they did not, their competitors may get to hire the better talent, and eventually, it would cost them a lot more.

When asked about the % that JobStreet.com gave to the Venture Capitalist which invested in the company, he said that it was around 20%-30% for SGD 3 Million.

Mark said that while he would love to be angel investors, sometimes, he is not prepared to invest in a business, where it might take another 10-15 years to succeed. He might not be ready to put in money and then shared the sufferings through many years. Mark also wanted the companies that he invest in, to have open minds, so that advice and opinion can be heard constructively. The chemistry between the investor and the entrepreneur needs to be there too.

Mark asked those who had business plans to share with Dr. Siva, Malek or Kwee Bee, and if they thought that it is good, they could help to contact Mark.

Mark also shared on his experience of visiting Silicon Valley back in 2000. His friend brought him to visit 2 brothers in the warehouse, where they were selling old games software. His friend was investing in it, and he asked whether Mark wanted to invest. Mark felt that the business was interesting, so he invested for some money. Since then, he occasionally kept in touch with them, and they assured Mark that the business is fine. Soon, dot com bust happens, and Mark thought that the business might get affected as well. So, Mark didn't follow up with them.

Then in 2007, they wrote to Mark to ask Mark to sign for them to sell the company for USD100 Million. It was the best investment that Mark had made. They were the one that created Guitar Hero, which was a top selling item in Christmas. A public listed company bought it over. Mark said that the two brothers worked very hard, and made it work.

Malek Ali, who was with Mark in the early days of JobStreet.com, shared that Mark is also an investor in BFM 89.9. Malek is the founder and CEO of BFM 89.9 . Malek shared that sometimes path might diverged, but eventually it might meet again. Malek shared that when he started BFM, he looked for his ex-colleagues in JobStreet.com to be his investor, and 3 of the JobStreet.com founders/top management invested in BFM. Kwee Bee played an instrumental role too. So, Malek advised on building network and friendship, and one can tap into trusted people.

Malek shared that BFM was for a different agenda and it often promoted for social cause, eg it promoted Jimmy's games.

Mark said that Malek's passion of radio was there, even in his JobStreet.com days.

Mark said that without the money from VC, JobStreet.com would not have money and know-how to expand abroad. He mentioned that things like how to sign lease in India was something different and one had to learn to do it. India is a different world.

Mark shared that he had always wanted to be here with TeAM members, but sometimes time was tough to be arranged.

JobStreet English Language Assessment

After some incubation, finally JobStreet English Language Assessment (JobStreet ELA) is borned!!!

Today, New Sunday Times gave a good write-up on it on Page 13 on NST. Check it out here .

Eric Sito, General Manager of JobStreet.com shared with NST on the mechanics of JobStreet ELA, and hopefully, we will be able to do our little bit to help improving the English Language of the workforce, where employers would have a better way to select job seekers with better English language command, and hence, job seekers would work hard to improve on their English.

Check it out at here .

It is launched for Malaysia now, and it would be launched for Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand next month.

Message to Fresh Graduates of 2009

This is an article I wrote in JobStreet.com Forum for Career & Education .
----
It's May again, and it is the time when fresh graduates, especially those in public institutions in Malaysia will be hitting the job market. A rough estimation would mean that about 100,000 young and talented workforce will be entering the corporate world (maybe some will be entering the civil service, and that's good!). Some might also decide to further their studies.

Looking at this, my thought would be that in usual years, employers/HR managers will be cheering, because now, they have a lot more talents to tap on. There is a bigger talent pool, that they can rely on.

However for this year, things might be a bit more difficult. I won't say that there won't be any job vacancy. It will be utterly wrong if I say so. There are still a lot of vacancies, but there might be quite a bit fewer than past years. With the talent supply pool stays the same, the competition will only get stiffer. Plus, there might be still some who graduated end of last year/early of this year, or even 1 year ago, who might still be looking for their ideal job. They will be fighting for the same spot as well.

This article is not meant to be an article for me to rant on this, but I hope to constructively share with those who will graduate this year, to really prepare yourself (and for those who will graduate next year or in upcoming years), do prepare as well! Be ready for the challenge!

Some of the tips that I have will be as follow:-
1. Since some of you are still in the midst of final exams or working on your thesis/final projects, do make sure that those are your best efforts. Getting better grade is always a good thing. I won't go into how big the effect of good grades, but it won't harm you having better grades. I am not asking you to just ignore everything and just be a bookworm either.

2. Once you have finished your final exam, do start your job hunt. Start it early! There might be some who will take 3-4 months holiday, to wait for the graduation ceremony, before starting the job search. My advice is that you should have started, and if you haven't, do start now. It is better to be earlier, than later, unless you won't mind being in the job market hunting for it for many months to come. Do remember the tough economic situation that we are facing.

3. Now that you know you have to start your job hunt, you might be wondering what you should be doing. My advice will be for you to prepare your resume. Enhance your resume, and make sure that it doesn't make various mistakes. Do search around other articles within this forum, where there are discussions on common mistakes for resumes . So, look out for those errors. Don't make the same mistakes.

4. Besides resume, do look around for the jobs that you want to apply. Research on the industry, your specialization, and maybe even new opportunities/fields that you want to explore. You are still young, so a lot of opportunities to look around. Don't be too bothered about the long working hours, demanding supervisors, lower pay etc. As a fresh graduate, you ought to learn on the job, and grow professionally and personally. It is about how you can learn from your colleagues, supervisors, and also from your peers.

5. Once you are ready (and hopefully, it is not too long from now), start the actual process of job applications. Using online job boards, like JobStreet.com will be an easy way for you to apply. Do fill up the JobStreet.com template of resume once, and you can use it to apply for all your jobs in your whole life. (Of course, you need to update your resume from time to time). At any moment, there are more than 1,000 jobs for fresh grads. So, grab it before everyone goes for it! You can view the jobs here .

6. Once you apply, do check on the status. You can log onto your jobstreet account, to see whether employers have put you under consideration, or it is still in process. Hopefully, you will get some of the employers to call you up for interview. One of the way to see would be on whether your resumes are viewed (you can know about this when you log into your jobstreet account and look at your application status). If resume view is equal to 0, then it means that you need to enhance on the summary of your resume (using jobstreet template) to attract the employers to view your full resume. If you have some resume views, but not getting any interview, then do enhance your entire resume. Employers check out your resume, but decide not to call you up for interview. If you get some interview opportunities, and can't get the job, then do work on your interview skills.

7. Talking on interview skills, do enhance on it! What's the first question in all interviews? They will most likely ask you to "Introduce yourself". Focus on how you will impress them and highlight your strength when you introduce yourself. It is not about talking on your family, hometown (unless you can use it to strengthen your case on why they should hire you). Talk about specific stuff that gets their attention. And do really research about the company/position, before you go to interview. Be punctual too and be professional. And the last question in interview is always "do you have any question?", and do definitely make sure that you have. That shows your interest and ask intelligent questions. After the interview, don't forget to send the thank you note too. It could be via email, but make sure you do.

Hope that what I wrote here would be of some value to you. Don't forget that it is you, who will decide whether you will get employed or not.

p/s: Oh yeah, I almost miss out on this. Don't forget that all of you are talented people, and you do have talent to showcase to potential employers. So, don't forget to pitch your talent at PitchYourTalent.com . It is the latest job seeker service that we have launched, and as of now, more than 32,000 people have signed up! You can go to the page, and you can see the real current statistic of how many people have already signed up! Do check it out here !

JobStreet.com 2008 Financial Results

JobStreet.com just announced their 4th Quarter Results yesterday and also this means the entire 2008 results.

Operationally, JobStreet.com does fantastically! Am always amazed at how the firm is able to really leverage on it, and grow well.

Looking at Q4, revenue does drop marginally by 4% from RM23.149 Million to RM22.234 Million, due to the tough economic situation. This is based on y-o-y comparison. Looking in terms of Profits from Operating Activities, it went up from RM7.053 Million to RM8.110 Million. That's a 15.0% growth!

However, due to the bad economic situation, JobStreet.com decided to recognize some impairment in its investment worth RM5.363 Million. This would mean that moving forward, all these loses have been recognized.

For Profit before taxation, it drops from RM7.607 Million to RM3.001 Million, and Profit After tax drops from RM6.991 Million to RM2.163 Million.

However, if we look at the entire financial year of 2008, then things would be a lot more rosier.

Revenue went up from RM83.079 Million to RM102.331 Million, which is a 23.2% increase. Profit from Operating Activities went up from RM31.424 Million to RM45.203 Million, which is a huge increase of 43.8%. Profit Before Tax (after deducting the impairment loss and loss on disposal of an associate) grew from RM33.663 Million to RM39.324 Million, which is an increase of 22.7%. Profit After tax grew from RM30.283 Million to RM34.983 Million, which is a grew of 15.6%.

Looking at above, the way I see it, margin from operating activities does increase from 37.82% (Taking RM31.424 Mil divided by RM83.079 Mil) to 44.17% (Taking RM45.203 Mil divided by RM102.331 Mil). So, seems to me that there is a growth in productivity!

Above is what I interpret based on what I understood of the financial results. I am not a finance or accounting major and above are all analysis done in my personal capacity.

JOBSTREET.COM REPORTS RM1.7 MILLION NET PROFIT FOR Q4 2008
Friday 20/02/2009

KUALA LUMPUR – 20 FEBRUARY 2009-- JobStreet Corporation Berhad (Main Board: "JOBST") Posted Its Quarterly Results For The Final Quarter Of 2008 With Revenue And Net Profit Attributable To Shareholders Declining 3.9% And 74.6% Respectively. The Significant Decline In Net Profit Was Primarily Attributed To A Provision For Impairment Loss On Investments Of RM 5.4 Million.

The decrease in revenue for the quarter was mainly resulting from lower sales from JobStreet SELECT (search & selection services) and JobStreet RESOURCE (contract staffing) by 53.8% and 16.2%, respectively. In addition, lower distribution income from the Group’s investment in quoted unit trusts also contributed to the decrease in revenue. The Group’s core products of JobStreet ESSENTIAL (job posting) and JobStreet IMPACT (career website management service) performed relatively well and registered growth in sales by 1.8% and 65.8% respectively during the quarter.

The global recession has affected investor sentiment worldwide and cause valuations on many stock exchanges to fall. In this respect, as discussed above, the Group booked a provision of RM5.4 million for impairment of its investments in quoted securities which significantly impacted the profitability for the quarter.

On a year to date basis, the Group managed to finish the year with a 13.6% improvement to its bottom line, as the Group’s core business operations in its principal markets in Malaysia, Singapore and Philippines continued to grow in 2008.

A quarter-on-quarter followed by a year-on-year comparison:-

Q4 2008RM'000 Q4 2007RM'000 %Increase/(Decrease)
Revenue 22,234 23,149 (3.9)
Profit before taxation 3,001 7,607 (60.5)
Profit after taxation and minority interests 1,703 6,709 (74.6)

Year Ended
31.12.2008RM'000 31.12.2007RM'000 % Increase/ (Decrease)
Revenue 102,331 83,079 23.2
Profit before taxation 39,324 33,663 16.8
Profit after taxation and minority interests 32,824 28,886 13.6

Mark Chang, CEO of JobStreet Corporation Berhad says “In view of the current market situation, we want to be prudent in recognizing some impairment on our quoted investments.” He added, “Many companies have started to cut down on their recruitment activities in response to the recession and our challenge will be to come up with innovative and effective recruitment solutions that best meet their needs during this difficult time.”

JobStreet.com Retrenchment Helpline Officially Launched

Yesterday, 23rd January 2009, JobStreet.com officially launched its JobStreet Retrenchment Helpline . This is part of JobStreet Cares initiative, which would help Malaysians who are affected by this recession, to get back into employment as soon as possible.

Words of mouth of this launch got spreaded 3 days before the official launch, and more than 4,300 job seekers submitted their resume! This shows that a lot of Malaysians do get affected and am sure the number that would get affected would be much higher.

Please help to spread the words of this site, as your little effort might be able to help your friends in need. Having an extra help by JobStreet.com to specifically target to help those job seekers who are retrenched would be able to help them to come out from the doom days of being retrenched. Do sign up for JobStreet Retrenchment Helpline !

Below is the official press relase by JobStreet.com, the largest recruitment site in South East Asia.

-----
"JobStreet.com has currently launched the JobStreet Retrenchment Helpline service which is aimed at lending a helping hand to those who might be feeling the effects of the recent retrenchments due to the global economic slowdown.

This initiative is born based on JobStreet’s observations on the market situation in Malaysia and around this region. JobStreet has been actively monitoring the current recruitment industry and based on our findings, we have decided to set up the Retrenchment Helpline Service as a pre-emptive measure aimed at protecting the welfare of Malaysian jobseekers.

The JobStreet Retrenchment Helpline is free-of-charge as we want to make the service available to as many people as possible. All they need to do is register, upload their resume and JobStreet’s team of career professionals will categorize them based on their industries. The JobStreet team will also contact the jobseekers who use this service, to further find out what are the core competencies and marketable skills. This is to enable JobStreet to recommend jobs for them.

In line with providing solutions to Malaysian jobseekers in times of economic slowdown, JobStreet will also intensify Resume & Career Clinics. This is an initiative which helps jobseekers write better resumes, gain better understanding of the job market and sharpen their job hunting skills. JobStreet will run Resume & Career Clinic tours in campuses and also on-site in companies.

Jobseekers can also look forward to more career fairs that will cater to a wide range of jobseekers from different backgrounds and needs. JobStreet will also seek to conduct more market surveys, run more career makeover seminars and maintain a close working relationship with the government and HR industries so that together we will be able to provide an efficient recruitment solution for all jobseekers both in good times and difficult times."

About JobStreet.com

JobStreet operates the JobStreet.com (www.jobstreet.com) online recruitment websites presently covering the employment markets in Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, India, Bangladesh and Japan. The Group currently services over 50,000 corporate customers and over 5 million jobseekers. JobStreet is listed on Main Board of Bursa Malaysia Securities (JOBST).

-----
Business Times also covered the press conference yesterday.

Its write-up is as follow here

-----
JOBSTREET.COM (0058) said there were fewer jobs advertised on its online job posting service since the start of the year, suggesting a cautious employment market.

The company, which earns a fee from companies that advertise on its website, said the manufacturing sector seems to be the hardest hit.

Citing the company's Job Outlook Report for the first quarter of 2009, chief operating officer Suresh Thiru said the overall job outlook confidence is challenging.

He said companies will hire fewer new workers in the first three months of this year compared with the same period last year.
From a random selection of about 1,700 JobStreet.com clients that were polled last December, 56 per cent said they would employ fewer in the first quarter of this year.

Only 14 per cent of them said that they would hire more new people in the first quarter compared with 55 per cent in the same period last year.

About 30 per cent said that their hirings would remain more or less the same.

Suresh said if the jobs market continues to worsen, there will be an impact on the company's revenue.

Meanwhile, the company has launched a new service in anticipation of the deteriorating employment market targeted at retrenched workers.

"The JobStreet.com Retrenchment Helpline service is aimed at lending a helping hand to those who might be affected by the recent retrenchment brought about by the global economic slowdown," said its general manager Eric Sito.

He said the helpline is a pre-emptive measure aimed at protecting Malaysian job seekers.

Since the service was posted on its website three days ago, JobStreet.com has received some 4,300 resumes.

During this economic slowdown, the company will intensify its Resume and Career Clinics to help job seekers write better resumes, gain better understanding of the job market and sharpen their job hunting skills.

"This will increase their employability rate in the market," Sito said.

200,000 to 400,000 Expected to Lose Their Jobs in Malaysia

Thanks to Daryl Wong for the news below.

It sounds pretty gloomy. "According to the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF), between 200,000 and 400,000 workers are expected to lose their jobs this year." That's very gloomy.

For those of you who are retrenched and looking for a job in Malaysia, do go to JobStreet.com Retrenchment Helpline .

News below is quoted from Bernama

-----
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 19 (Bernama) -- Aini cuts a forlorn-looking figure as she looked out from the window of her 13th floor apartment at the city’s majestic landmark, the Petronas Twin Towers, here.

Aini who has been working for some years with an international financial institution in the city is worried that soon she might have to pack her bags and head for her home village as news have filtered through that many workers would have to face retrenchment from their jobs or in more polite words, the ‘voluntary separation scheme’ (VSS).

The year 2009 is indeed going to be bleak for many workers like Aini and others in the private sector as the world braces itself for an economic downturn and retrenchment looms ahead. GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS

Many have anticipated that a huge economic crisis would hit the globe in 2009 as the indicators were already there.

According to recent news reports, the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) projected that 25 million workers would lose their jobs amidst the world economic crisis by the year 2010.

OECD that spreads its wings over 30 nations including all the industrialised countries also projected that economic recovery would take place at the end of 2009 and the ensuing year would witness a weak global amplification.

Earlier, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) estimated that the number of those unemployed globally would rise by 20 million, to hit the 210 million mark by the end of 2009.

BLEAK ON THE HOME FRONT

Meanwhile on the home front, the retrenchment scenario is expected to be as bad.

The picture is expected to be as gloomy with more than 4,700 workers expected to lose their jobs within the first three months of this year as employers are expected to be preparing to reduce costs and losses in anticipation of the world economic crisis.

Recent news reports quoted Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam as saying that 102 employers had stated that they would be retrenching their workers in stages from January while according to the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF), between 200,000 and 400,000 workers are expected to lose their jobs this year.

For 1,500 employees of Western Digital (M) Sdn Bhd, Samajaya Free Industrial Zone in Kuching, Sarawak, they were among the early batches of workers to receive the ‘rude shock’ even before the arrival of the year 2009.

The United States-based maker of hard discs had ceased its operations in December 2008, citing the economic downturn as the reason behind the move.

Foreign workers are no exception to this as Dr Subramaniam has been reported as saying that the retrenchment exercise would also see 2,000 foreigners losing their jobs within these two months. LAST RESORT

Dr Subramaniam also expressed his hope that employers would use the retrenchment exercise as a last resort when dealing with the economic downturn.

The minister voiced this wish in his speech at the function to launch the Manual on Workers Retrenchment Management at the Johor Manpower Department in Johor Baharu last month.

He also launched the Workers’ Retrenchment Operations Room that functions worldwide. The help line is 03-88905015/88905016/88905017/88905018 during office hours.

In the mean time, among the early measures to avoid being retrenched are reducing the claims for overtime pay as well as for more off-days and wages.

At the same time, the government is monitoring the situation and hopes that the employers are not taking the opportunity to sack workers by using the economic crisis excuse.

However if there is no way out from the retrenchment exercise, the workers welfare should be taken care of and they should be given the proper compensation and other benefits deemed proper by the country’s labour laws.

Any voluntary or temporary retrenchment scheme should be reported to the Manpower Department at least 30 days before the exercise. FOREIGN WORKERS

"The locals are being retrenched, why not the foreigners".

That could be on the mind of many Malaysians referring to the presence of 1.2 million migrant workers in Malaysia. This represents some 20 percent of the number of workers in this country.

Meanwhile, the Human Resources Ministry is considering to freeze the recruitment of foreign workers. This is seen as a measure to assist the local workers who had lost their jobs including those retrenched from their employment in Singapore.

According to recent news reports, some half million workers including Malaysians are facing the retrenchment exercise in the island republic.

As of November 2008, about 28,000 of the unemployed were registered with the Manpower Department and 6,000 were reported to have found jobs. VARIOUS INCENTIVES

However for those who lost their jobs, this is not the end of the world as the government has announced that it would cooperate with the public and private sectors to provide training programmes for the retrenched workers.

Under these programmes, the retrenched workers would be trained to acquire new skills for jobs in other fields like hospitality, tourism and information communication technology (ICT).

It has been reported that the Cabinet has given its nod for RM100 million allocations for the retraining scheme.

In this aspect the retrenched workers should be bold enough to accept changes and not be too choosy when picking jobs. They should also be willing to venture into other fields like entrepreneurship, as the government provides various incentives in this sector.

Among these are the RM45 million fund provided by the Rural and Regional Development Ministry to produce more cottage industries entrepreneurs for 2009.

In this aspect, the retrenched workers could make 63-year-old Mohammed Chin, named the recipient of the Tunas Mekar Entrepreneur Award 2008 (men’s category) as their model.

Mohammed who became handicapped after an accident has not allowed his disability to prevent him from becoming a successful entrepreneur. -- BERNAMA MMA ZUL CR

JobStreet.com Retrenchment Helpline launched

Almost everyday, we hear of negative news around the world, be it growth rate forecast is reduced, profit/revenue below expectation, or retrenchment.

Financial sector and manufacturing sector are the worst hit. The high tech sector is affected too. CNET has a page that lists all the layoffs in the tech world, and it is scary to see so. Check it out here .

Among those companies that have laid off include Motorola, Oracle, Seagate, Dell, Lenovo, One Laptop Per Child, AMD, Unisys, Electronic Arts, Western Digital, Yahoo!, Sony, AT&T, Adobe, Palm, Sun, LinkedIn, Nokia, Freescale, ebay etc. Even Google does seem to announce a layoff. And Microsoft might be announcing one real soon. :( Seems hardly any major company is spared.

At local front, the 8th JobStreet.com Malaysia Career & Training Fair was successfully launched this morning. This is the largest Career Fair in town. As the largest recruitment firm in South East Asia, JobStreet.com also launched its JobStreet.com Retrenchment Helpline today. This portal would be specifically targeted to all Malaysians who are retrenched. JobStreet.com would help them to headhunt for a job. And this service is provided free of charge, as part of the corporate social responsibility of JobStreet.com!

So, if you do get retrenched, don't get too panicked. JobStreet.com is here to help you to find a job!
