Public Speaking and Media Relations
Last weekend, thanks to Lifelong Learning , I get the chance to go for 2-day training camp by The Voice Academy .
It was seminar on Public Speaking and Media Relations.
It is great that the instructor shared with us many tips on that, from how to conduct press conference, how to handle podium, how to speak, intonation, voice control, body language, the needs by those reporters, how to face tv screen etc. It was definitely interesting and great learning!
Some of the key learnings.
1. 55% of the Golden ratio of public speaking is actually body language, with 38% on intonation and only 7% on the content! Yet, we need the content to speak..
2. Major skills in presentation - stressing point, where to stop, intonation, rhythm and who is the audience.
3. Main things that public speaker should avoid - fabricate content/avoid questions, hide from reporters, don't dare to say "I don't know", do not be too friend with reporters, do not be against reporters, do not say "I can't tell you", do not try to control reporters, do not ask reporters for source of news, do not memorize texts.
Hopefully, these would be good teasers to begin with. :) To know more, go and take the lessons lor... hahaha...

Interesting Interview on Lifelong Learning With Quek
Below is an interesting interview on Lifelong Learning by Quek Ngee Meng, Acting Director of Lifelong Learning.
The full interview is at here
-----

EQ Talk by Lifelong Learning
Quoting from The Star and Lifelong Learning's Website , there would be an interesting talk on Emotional Quotient (EQ) on Jan 26, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm at the South City Lifelong Learning Centre in Seri Kembangan.
For more information, go to Lifelong Learning Website .
The full article above reproduced:-
---
The Key to Success in Life
KUALA LUMPUR: Good management of one's emotions is the key to greater success in one's career and life.
Senior chartered psychologist and computer scientist from Oxford University Dr Shaun Zeng said the ability to manage such emotions depended on the health of one's emotional intelligence.
He said work problems, like finding it difficult to work with others or leading co-workers as well as finding it overly challenging to meet one's work targets thus resulting in constant change of jobs, were usually symptoms of underlying emotional issues.
“If you feel unmotivated towards self-improvement or if you are generally unhappy with life and with people around you, you need to start looking into your emotional intelligence. You may find that once you can manage your emotions, you can manage anything in life,” he said.
Emotional intelligence or quotient (EQ), he explained, is a person's “emotional quality”. A person with a high EQ can handle his own emotions well and will be able to manage life well.
“Today, most people take the term EQ to mean one's social popularity or aptness. In actual fact, EQ incorporates a multitude of human capabilities.
“Under the rubric of EQ lies the complexity of a person's competencies to demonstrate intelligent use of emotions for self-management and social integration. People with a positive and high emotional quality are usually popular and are generally happy,” he added.
Another important quality necessary for attaining personal life goals is the ability to suppress the desire for immediate gratifications, an aspect of EQ, stressed Dr Zeng.
He cites author J.K. Rowling who wrote Harry Potter as an example:
“She was divorced, lived with her daughter under public assistance in a tiny apartment and her first book was rejected by 10 publishers. Despite the setbacks, her persistence in pursuing her goal led her to become the best selling author in literary history,”
To learn more about EQ, those interested can attend a public talk and workshop on the subject conducted by Dr Zeng in collaboration with the MCA Lifelong Learning Campaign on Jan 26, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm at the South City Lifelong Learning Centre in Seri Kembangan.
For those interested in a career in the training industry or becoming certified and authorised professional EQ trainers, two five-day Trainers Certification Course will be held in July. There will be separate courses for English and Chinese trainers.
Registration begins now. For details call 03-33434999 or 03- 21618044. Other information is available at www. IQKID.BIZ or www.lll.net.my

Lifelong Learning Reading Club Looking for Reading Mentor
Any of you wanted to contribute back to community/society?
Any of you have strong interest in reading?
Any of you want to help inculcate reading habit among the younger generation of Malaysia?
Any of you just want to help out?
Any of you have spare time?
Any of you feel that you have passion for society?
If you answer yes to any of the question above, why not check out Lifelong Learning Reading Club. It is a great way for you to contribute.
Lifelong Learning Reading Club is actively looking for Reading Mentor to help others. Its acting director, Mr. Quek Ngee Meng said, "We are looking for people who will act as a group leader or 'mentor' for other readers at the LLL Reading Club events. If you like to read and share your ideas or appreciation of a book with other readers, you are just the person we want.”
The full report of article is in The Star .
It is reproduced here.
----
MCA Lifelong Learning Campaign (LLL) is looking for avid readers to be reading mentors for their reading club.
“We are looking for people who will act as a group leader or 'mentor' for other readers at the LLL Reading Club events. If you like to read and share your ideas or appreciation of a book with other readers, you are just the person we want,” said LLL acting director Quek Ngee Meng.
Launched last November, the LLL Reading Club aims to foster the love of reading and create a platform for like-minded readers to discuss and share ideas and knowledge. This is where the mentors come in, as they will be the facilitator or moderator, added Quek.
“With the mentor's guidance, the other readers will get a chance to delve deeper into specific areas as well as strengthen their communication skills through group discussions.” Quek Ngee Meng:
With the mentor's guidance, the other readers will get a chance to delve deeper into specific areas as well as strengthen their communication skills through group discussions.
The LLL Reading Club had identified five subject areas namely Life & Health, Parenting Skills & Education, Literature & Classics, Business & Management and Social Science.
Under each category, a panel had carefully selected titles that will not only pique readers' interest but also enhance their knowledge in the area. Selected books include The Man and his Ideas by Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting; A thousand splendid suns by Khaled Hosseni and For one more day by Mitch Albom.
Participants are expected to master the essence of the book with the guidance of the mentors who would each be assigned based on his or her professional knowledge or experience. For those who are interested in becoming mentors but lack experience, a training workshop will be organised by the Lifelong Learning Secretariat to train them in the basic skills of leading a reading club.
In the workshop they will learn about the role of the LLL Reading Club mentors, and the principles and approaches in leading the club. At the end of the workshop, a mock reading club will be organised so that participants can apply the skills they learnt.
The Mentor Training Workshop, which is open to all interested in becoming an LLL Reading Club Mentor or just picking up mentoring skills, will be held this Saturday, at 2pm at KTAR Learning Centre, Wisma MCA, Jalan Ampang, here.
The Hainan Association Book Club executive advisor Stanley Yong will conduct the workshop. Starting from this month, the LLL Reading Club will be set up in different Lifelong Learning Centres, MCA divisions as well as the premises of Chinese NGOs and community organisation centres.
For more information, visit the LLL website: Lifelong Learning , call 03-2161 8044 or email reading@lll.net.my .

Lifelong Learning Reading Club
After a recent MCA Lifelong Learning (LLL) Reading Club launching, the club has taken an important first step to recommend 6 books for reading for January to June 2008. The focus on the Reading Club would be on 5 areas, Life & Health, Parenting Skills & Education, Literature & Classics, Business & Management and Social Science.
LLL is looking for those who are interested to become mentors. There will be a training session provided on 17th December 7:30pm at Wisma MCA, Jalan Ampang. To get more info, go to Lifelong Learning's Website or call 03-21618044.
As Mr. Quek Ngee Meng, Acting Director of Lifelong Learning mentioned, "Reading need not be a solitary activity any more. It can be a social activity where different people can share similar interests and their thoughts on different books.
The 6 books recommended are:-
1. (Literature & Classics) - For One More Day by Mitch Albom
2. (Literature & Classics) - A Thousand Splendid Sons by Khaled Hosseni
3. (Life & Health) - You're What You Eat: Your Healthy Lifestyle Guide
4. (Parenting & Education) - How To Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk by Adela Faber and Elaine Mazlish
5. (Business & Management) - Build To Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies by Jim Collins
6. (Social Science) - The Man and His Ideas by YB Dato' Seri Ong Ka Ting
