CORNELL CLUB JULY NEWSLETTER
Editor : Adeline Kooi, VP for Programmes
Dear Cornellians,
The first half of 2008 simply flew by!
This July, look forward to our annual Cornell Club Satay Party. This is one of our bigger club events in the year which a lot of people turn up at. Details are listed below and we're really looking forward to seeing all of you there!
The chocoholics in the club also gave feedback that it due time we had some chocolate appreciation and perhaps even a chocolate-making workshop. We're pleased to announce that a Chocolate Workshop will be held on the evening 15 July. Scroll down for more information!
Other upcoming events include the Varsity LAN-Gaming Tournament for DOTA, Counterstrike, Warcraft and Starcraft enthusiasts. Held on Aug 2, this event is jointly organized by the Cornell and Stanford Alumni Clubs. All alumni are invited to form teams (members need not be from the same universities) for an afternoon of fun. Prizes to be won! Read on for more details and sign-ups.
Lastly, save the date in August for Life After Bonding ! This is one of our self-help events where alumni gather to share about their jobs, to give ideas to people who are interested in getting back into the job market. As last year's experience taught us, this event was really popular so look out for sign-ups in next month's newsletter and fastest fingers first.
See you the July and August Cornell Club events!!
Warmest Regards,
The Cornell Club Executive Committee

What You Missed in June …
With many people either holiday or busy catching up with friends and family back in Singapore, June was a relatively quiet month in terms of club activities.
We still held our month Restaurant Club outing. This June, members tasted Indian-vegetarian food at Annalakshmi. This restaurant is a non-profit and its takings sustain the Temple of Fine Arts which teaches dance and music of North and South India. The restaurant was ornately decorated with Indian art and carvings, and provided an excellent ambiance for us diners to just catch up and make new friends over a good buffet dinner and some excellent lassi drinks, while also supporting a larger cause!

DUAL Updates
DUAL is the Distinguished Universities Alumni League, an umbrella organization comprising members from the following 18 alumni clubs - Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Cornell University Hoteliers, Dartmouth College, INSEAD, Johns Hopkins University, London Business School, London School of Economics, MIT, NUS MBA, Oxbridge Society, Princeton University, Stanford University, University of Chicago, University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania and Yale University
1. An afternoon talk with Ross School of Business Professor Linda Lim on "Rethinking Globalization? Financial Turmoil, the US Presidential Election, and Asia"
Paradoxically, as globalization's economic benefits have spread around the world, opposition to it has increased, particularly in the developed countries that were once its primary beneficiaries and champions. At the same time, mass public opinion surveys show large, even overwhelming support for international trade and investment in
nearly all developing countries, from China to Africa—this despite the fact that globalization can and does increase economic volatility and inequality, even as it spurs income growth and reduces poverty.
In 2008, globalization's one-time world champion, the United States, finds itself caught in economic difficulties—financial market turmoil, recession and commodity price inflation—while mired in a costly and unpopular war overseas, both of which provide fodder for a presidential election campaign that has had to contend with rising
trade protectionism and anti-immigrant sentiment in all sides of the political arena. This talk will analyze these hot issues and consider their implications for Asia.
The speaker:
Professor Linda Lim, a Singaporean economist, Professor of Strategy at the Ross School of Business and Director of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Michigan, is ideally placed to discuss this subject from U.S. national, multilateral-international,Asia-regional, and corporate perspectives. She teaches MBA courses on The World Economy and Business in Asia at Michigan, one of the most globalized American states that has also been hardest-hit by recession, and is a critical "swing state" in every U.S. presidential election, including this one. She has served as consultant to the U.N. and other international agencies and multinational corporations, and on corporate boards, and her current research is on the global business strategies of corporations from China and ASEAN.
