Neoteny Labs Singapore is about to launch and what better way to celebrate than an event with all our friends?
For two days in December we'll be gathering in Singapore and discussing a whole collection of topics from investing and incubating, to building start ups and hackerspaces. Hosted and organized by Joi Ito, Sean Bonner, James Chan and Tara Brown we'll talk about why these things are interesting and important to us, and why we're looking towards Singapore to do them.

a) Twitter is a 10 years in the making, and not something that happened over night.
b) It is meant to be an agent of change and solve problems. Would look at Twitter as a social innovation/social responsibility.
c) Happy mistakes are the best kind. Twitter is a happy mistake.
d) Opportunities can be manufactured. Don't wait for opportunities. Initiate it. Create the opportunities.
e) Creativity is a renewable source. Biz is a artist first, and then only techie. He started with graphic design, before moved to web design (when he started Xanga).
f) Entrepreneurship means becoming mortal. In order to have dramatic success, need to have dramatic failure. Learn it the hard way.
g) Social alchemy is taking place. From blogging to social networking and now twittering. Started blogging on catcha and write about blogging itself, and was invited to write a book.
h) From a simple tweet "I am having a cup of coffee at Logan airport." People meet up and start a conversation and meet up with new people.
i) The open exchange of information has a positive global impact. For Twitter, all the info are public info and anyone can search, and it makes people more informed and more engaged. Hence, positive global impact.
j) Really love and use the tool that you build. Build it for ownself, and you will find it useful. Build a prototype over weekend and try it out.
k) Some says that Twitter is fun but it is not useful. In essence, build something that fun and thrilling and then would only think about business aspect.
l) Is Twitter just a rudimentary social networking or something more? In Texas, food operators tweet about the location they would be at, and can move large group of people around.
m) Tiny bits of information can have a profound impact. People help one another for instance during earthquake, when quick update on Twitter helps.
n) Twitter is about the triumph of humanity and not the triumph of technology. Twitter is what people do with the service, and not what it is meant to do.
o) A rich and diverse ecosystem has emerged. Twitter provides open source for its API. Allow people to create applications. Many companies are created to build applications or Twitter-related products.
p) The potential for impact increases with a focus on mobile. Hence, Twitter is created with 140 characters (as the total limit for mobile is 160 characters). There are 1.5 billion web users, but 4 billion mobile users. Twitter offer SMS access to users in many places, with no additional cost.
q) Giving back is in Twitter DNA. TweetOut was organized in 200 cities in the world, to raise quarter million on a Thursday evening.
r) There is special pinot noir for Twitter, and the profits are used to help to build library.
s) Indirectly, Twitter helps in literacy. If you can't read, you can't tweet.
t) Twitter allow companies to spend as much money as they want, as long as they get more back.
u) To start-ups, bootstrap first and show early sign of growth.

Congratulations to Khailee and team for successfully organized Youth Engagement Summit 2009 (YES 2009) at Putrajaya International Convention Center on 16th and 17th November 2009.
A few things that really stand out in the Youth Engagement Summit:-
a) The quality of the speakers
b) The spirit of the youth across South East Asia
c) The volunteers (especially those youth)
I was lucky to be able to be there to listen to those speakers and also to meet up with 20 of our JobStreet.com job seekers, who came from Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand through the partnership with SEAChange. JobStreet.com is the Official Job Board of SEAChange and official partner of YES2009.
This post is going to be long and I will share a few points that I learn from each of the speaker.

a) Youth are now effecting and embracing the changes around. They are daring to spark a change, and many youths are already a leader today.

a) If youth do not speak up, the voices would never be heard and get lost in the noises.
b) There are 200 Million youths in the South East Asia region, and it is time to empower the youth. Share views or ideas around.

a) This event is organized due to inspired by change. Hope to create new generation of leaders. If we try, we may succeed, and hence embark on this summit.
b) It is great to see 600,000 youth from South East Asia step forward and get heard.
c) This was planned 4 months ago, with the dream of getting Barack Obama to be here to address the audience. Met up with US State Department for 3 times.
d) Lets not give up on hope. Provide hope to shine and hopefully it would sparkle and the youth would be fearless leaders.
e) Get together to create miracles beyond the mission.
f) Have fun, share your experience/knowledge and learn. Hopefully the youth would go home a little wiser.
g) The duty of the organizer is not to fail the hope of the youth.

a) Total world population - 6.7 Billion. Of which, 200 Million live in South East Asia, age between 15 and 35 and ready to bring the change in their career, education, family etc. Hence, there is this movement South East Asia Youth For Change (SEAChange).
b) The Vietnamese saw war destroyed their nation, yet the youths meet up to speak in English and this network of meet-ups spread across the nation and it is small step to make Vietnamese more accessible to the world. (Note: Speaking English Meet-ups (Malaysia) Facebook Page was just created to encourage Malaysians to practice English Language.)
c) The Indonesian youths bring together to protect the rights of the children and have their voice heard by the government. They advice and help the government to understand more about the younger generation of Indonesians.
d) The Malaysian youths get together and make a difference.
e) In total, 105,552 stories were told from various groups in South East Asia.
f) For the youth, when we don't know something, we google; when we want to spread the news around, we tweet; when we want to connect with others, we facebook. The power is now in the hands of the youth.
g) The world has passed judgment on the youth, saying that the youth are apathetic. Employers have no faith on the youth. Many businesses pay millions to buy artificial relationship with the youth.
h) SEAChange has brought together 120 organizations to make the change for South East Asia youths. Millions of words and thousands of videos were shared. It is a network of believers.
i) SEAChange Facebook group has more than 41,000 youths.
j) We have come too far to not go all the way. We should groom the talents and champion the needs of the youth. Youth should start to believe in ourselves and there is no excuse for us to go all the way. We have come too far to not go all the way.

The next few posts are going to be about talks that I attended recently. A number of them, and I would do my best to share on what I learn from those talks.
The first one I am going to share would be about Sime Darby Lecture Series. Thanks a lot to Yu Cheng for providing me with this opportunity to attend. It was a talk by Professor Mohan Munasinghe on "Sustainable Development - Walking the Talk". This is the 5th lecture under this series, with previous talks by Professor Emil Salim, Professor Robert F. Engle, Revered Jesse Jackson and Tim Harford. I got the chance to attend the talk by my fellow Cornellian, Prof. Robert F. Engle and Tim Harford. So, this one is the 3rd one that I attended.

A little background of Professor Mohan Munasinghe. His name may seem not too familiar for most of us, but he is the joint recipient of 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, together with Al Gore. He is the Vice Chair of the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
With United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15 Copenhagen) to be held from 7th to 18th December 2009, it is good that we take stock and understand more on climate change and its impact. We only have one mother land, and we should treasure it.

Some of the key sharings by Professor Mohan and Tun Musa Hitam that I capture.
1. Are we really walking the talk? Are we doing enough for the environment? Are we serious enough? Are we doing sustainable development?
2. We should apply SUSTAINOMICS, and the South can share with the South, and perhaps even share with the North.
3. 85% of the world's income are with the top 20% of people, whereas the lowest 20% of people are only having 1.4%.
4. If we do not take positive steps, by 2035, we would need natural regenerative capacity of 2 earths.
5. For climate change, poorer countries and poorer groups are the most vulnerable. We should make development more sustainable.
6. Today, financial bailout was $4 trillion, poverty spending was $100 billion a year, but for climate change, we are only spending a few billion a year.
7. For the stimulus plan, Korea spent 80% of it on Green Investments, whereas China spent 35%. Other countries spent between 10%-15%.
8. In the last 100 years, temperature went up 0.75 Celcius and sea level went up 16 cm. If no concrete step is done, temperature would go up another 3 Celcius by 2100 and sea level go up by 40 cm. If that happens, countries like Bangladesh would lose 17% of populated areas.
9. We should adopt common, but differentiated responsibilities. For developed nations, it is about transforming and decarbonise. Reduce the emission, whereas for developing countries, it would be about adaptation, where as they develop, they adopt greerer ways of doing things. There should be safety net for poor and vulnerable countries. Funds can be transferred, in change for carbon credits, where carbon is taken away from the earth.
10. The threshold is about 2 Celcius increase in temperature and we need to really do something urgently.
11. Now, the emission is 390 parts per million, and the maximum the world can go is 450 parts per million. So, if nothing is done, we are very near to the limit.
12. Climate change effort is like hiking, where we take a step at a time. Even though we won't know how peak is like, we should start plan for the hike and take a step at a time.
13. Sustainable Development Triangle - Economic, Social and Environmental
14. Sustainable development would transcend boundaries of disciplinary, space, time, stakeholders, operational and values.
15. The youth can and should do something for the environment. The Berlin Wall was torned down, due to initiatives by 50,000 youths in 1989.
16. Greed and selfishness are unsustainable.
17. Question to ask ourselves is that are we really to leapfrog and tunnel through?
18. We should identify the weak spots and arget group, and make the change. Say for light bulbs, then the target would be at consumer level, whereas for reduction of carbon for milk, it would be at the farm level (as 75% of carbon is there).
One of the interesting aspects for this talk is that the centerpiece on the table was plants, and each of us was asked to bring home at least a plant, so that we can be a little part of the change, and remind us of the environment and climate change.
Lets hope for the best for COP15! But in the mean time, lets do our little part for climate change.

XMU is to begin independent enrolment of foreign students under this scholarship as from the beginning of the 2006 academic year. Welcome foreign students to apply for the bachelor's, master's or doctoral programmes, whether taught in English or in Chinese.
Recipients will have their tuition fees covered. Scholarship duration: 4-5years for undergraduate programmes, 2-3years for master's programmes, 3 years for doctoral programmes.
The recipients' academic performance will be assessed each year and only those achieving the required standard will have their scholarship renewed for the following year.

The JISPA targets highly motivated government officials who may serve as future macroeconomic policy makers with the capacity and vision to contribute effectively to the economic development of their countries. Scholarship awards are made on the basis of the candidate's academic record and work background, mathematical and statistics skills, English language proficiency, and potential for contributing to the macroeconomic and financial management and economic development of their country. The assessment also includes qualities such as the candidate's commitment to public service, willingness to learn, and openness to new ideas.
Currently, the JISPA is open to qualified candidates from the following countries:
Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Lao P.D.R., Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pacific Island Countries, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
The scholarship covers tuition-related costs and most living expenses for the scholar herself/himself. Officials who receive the JISPA scholarship cannot accept other scholarships. Scholars are expected to devote full time to their studies while in Japan.
The program comprises two tracks: the partnership track and the open track. Because of the strong competition for scholarships, the JISPA is highly selective. In 2010-2011, a total of 30 new scholarships are available to candidates for the partnership track. There is no fixed limit on new scholarships for the open track, but generally only a small number of scholarships are awarded.

The prestigious HSP Huygens Programme is open to excellent students from all countries. It is aimed at talented students who want to come to the Netherlands in the final phase of their bachelor's studies or during their master's studies.
Application Deadline: 1 February 2010.
PhD applications can only be accepted from excellent students with the Chinese, Croatian or Turkish nationality. Furthermore, the minister has allocated part of the total budget for excellent students following programmes in Dutch language and literature, or Neerlandistiek.
The Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science has allocated seven million euros for excellent students coming to the Netherlands under the HSP Huygens Programme. There is no fixed number of available scholarships. The actual number is determined by the total cost of the variable components of the scholarships.
The HSP Huygens application round for the 2010-2011 academic year will start on 1 November 2009.
Important: the complete application, both digital and on paper, must be received by Nuffic no later than 1 February 2010. Applications that have not been submitted both digitally and on paper or that are incomplete will not be accepted.

Today, New Sunday Times gave a good write-up on it on Page 13 on NST. Check it out here .
Eric Sito, General Manager of JobStreet.com shared with NST on the mechanics of JobStreet ELA, and hopefully, we will be able to do our little bit to help improving the English Language of the workforce, where employers would have a better way to select job seekers with better English language command, and hence, job seekers would work hard to improve on their English.

Hopefully, this book would help Malaysians to one day get the elusive Gold Medal for International Mathematics Olympiads.
Suhaimi was a former Bronze Medalist (I hope I remember correctly, Bal) of International Mathematics Olympiads and he helped to train the National Team, which won the first silver medal in 2008. Suhaimi is an alumnus of MIT.
