Bucharest International Student Model United Nations (BISMUN)

We are honored to announce the launch of ASD's (Law Student's Association) first edition of Bucharest International Student Model United Nations (BISMUN). The event will begin Thursday, March 19 and will end Monday, March 23 2009.

The MUN is targeted at students from universities all over the world and is meant to increase students' interest in global issues and the UN. Within the conference, the participants will be able to exchange opinions and ideas about world policy, establish new contacts and learn about Romania and Bucharest.

BISMUN is the most ambitious project of this kind in Romania.

The participants will meet within the amphitheaters of the Faculty of Law Palace of Bucharest, Romania and discuss up-to date topics of international interest within the following committees:

Security Council
1. The crisis in South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
2. Piracy around the coastline of Somalia.

Economic and Social Council
1. Environmental Sustainability - The progress toward the achievement of Millennium Development Goal 7 in the regions of Africa and South-East Asia under the „Agenda 21".
2. Combating violence against women and children in Western Asia - The present status and measures to be taken.

Human Rights Council
1. Human Rights and the issue of national security: is it possible for a country to protect itself against terrorists without logging its citizens - call, internet and email history?
2. Peacekeeping forces in Haiti: obedience for human rights and criminal accountability.

1st Committee (DISEC)
1. Measures to prevent terrorists from acquiring weapons of mass destruction.
2. The situation of the nuclear weapons in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

2nd Committee (ECOFIN)
1. Second United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty(2008-2017) - financing for development to end hunger, poverty and lack of access to clean water and basic health services.
2. Joint efforts to be made by states for the purpose of diminishing the effects of the global economic depression, under the scope of IMF and World Bank.

6th Committee (LEGAL)
1. Criminal accountability of United Nations officials and experts on mission.
2. Nationality of natural persons in relation to the succession of States.
