Scientific Malaysian - Press Kit
Contact: admin@scientificmalaysia.com
Scientific Malaysian (www.scientificmalaysian.com) was set up in July 2011 as a platform to establish a global network of Malaysian scientific researchers to foster discourse as well as collaboration, regardless of affiliation and discipline, be they the pure sciences (biologists, chemists, physicists, etc) or applied sciences (engineers, biomedical scientists, etc). Researchers and administrators from the scientific research industries are also invited to participate and contribute ideas and viewpoints from the industrial perspective.
The missions of Scientific Malaysian are as follow:
· To provide a platform for the Malaysian scientific community across the world to discuss general scientific and research issues;
· To represent the voice of the Malaysian scientific community across the world;
· To provide valuable collective ideas in hopes of improving scientific research and development in Malaysia;
· To promote research collaborations or knowledge-sharing within the scientific community (both local and overseas Malaysian researchers) and/or with industries; and
· To inspire and provide guidance for early stage Malaysian researchers.
Scientific Malaysian aims to achieve the above missions through several approaches:
· An online portal that facilitates ongoing discussion on scientific research;
· A magazine (http://magazine.scientificmalaysian.com) that provides coverage of the latest research and development ventures undertaken by Malaysian scientific researchers; and
· Talks by Malaysian scientists/engineers at academic and research institutions around the world.
Scientific Malaysian is currently fully administered by volunteers. Interested participants can contact the administrators at admin@scientificmalaysian.com.

Sharing from Suet Li from Teach for Malaysia
i immediately regretted doing that. am i out of my mind?? here i am, struggling with everything as it is, and i have no idea if i am mentally or physically capable of pushing so far. they live pretty far away and some live quite deep into the villages, about 30 mins from where i live. but i remember Rakis, my orang asli kid's face and the conversation i had with him yesterday. he used to be a really happy kid, but the past few months he's been very sullen and angry all the time. he said it's cause he can't understand anything, and i can't give my attention to him cos everyone else is crying for help/running around beating people. rakis needs help, and i'm at my wits' end as to how to help him.
so i started with him and a few of my weakest but less misbehaving boys. i got them from their village and it was nice to see them waiting for me by the roadside in the darkness, with their backpacks and jeans and best shirt and eager smile. we had a very productive night reading peter and jane and reviewing stuff learned in school. this pic is of rakis reading with utmost concentration, and he was SUPER focused the entire time i just wanted to hug him and tell him that he's doing great.
when i sent them back, we listened to hitz fm and had a karaoke session in the car (mostly me singing haha). they were bickering about what was the singer singing, "cikgu itu "happy" kan?" "bukanlah "here" lah!" "bukan lah "him" lah!" (the word was "hero" but that's beside the point). then, i met some of their parents. some were nonchalant and didn't care where their kid was, some were very appreciative. but they all had one similarity: they all came from homes that are very not conducive to learning. dilapidated, noisy, dirty..
i drove home drained from the long day but i could still hear their voices in my car. it's defining moments like this that made me realize that they're worth pushing myself for, even if i have to start from scratch, from peter and jane book 1a."

Belajar MY Math - A 1-hour Gift that Lasts a Lifetime for Many Lives
This is a noble initiative by a fellow Malaysian, Mark Lee, who hope to create a grassroot project to help fellow Malaysian students.
"[I] realize that the sort of person you want to be is a person whose life multiplies life for others, especially those who lack the opportunities that you have been given."
- Translate a 10-min video-clip from English to Malay, which will take approximately an hour.
- Critique a translated 10 min video-clip, which will take approximately 30 mins. Thus within 1 hour, you can critique two 10 min Malay-translated video-clips.
- Johan of Talent Corp
- Dzameer of Teach for Malaysia
- Wan Saiful of IDEAS
- Ong Shien Jin
- Suhaimi Ramly
I had just alighted from the LRT @ KL Sentral. Amidst the mass of people making their way to the down escalator, there was a young lady walking rapidly towards a blind man gingerly tapping his red-white cane towards the down escalator.
It seemed she was about to bump into him; instead she reached out to gently hold his wrist, and carefully guided him down the escalator.I was touched by her compassion. Despite being of different races, she saw not his race, but rather his need. There's still hope for Malaysia, and you are part of that hope.

theSun Writing Competition
Thanks to Tricia for sharing this.
aspect that inspires you or delights you or even annoys you?
If you do, share it with your fellow Malaysians by taking part in the
theSun-1MDB 'Malaysia and Me' Writing Competition which closes on July
29.
The top three prizes are RM5,000, RM3,000 and RM2,000. There are also 10
Consolation Prizes of RM500 each.
If you are a Malaysian between the ages of 15 and 30, you are eligible to
take part, and can send in as many as three entries.
Your entry must be your own original work, and it must not have been
published before.
The competition is organised by theSun in conjunction with Merdeka 2011,
with the aim of encouraging literary expression by Malaysian youths.
We've kept the boundaries open by calling it simply a "writing
competition". This means you can write in any genre you wish.
Exercise your imagination. You can of course write an essay to address
the 'Malaysia and Me' theme. But if you feel you can best express it
in a poem, go for it. Or if you want to write a letter to your country or
anyone in particular, that's also fine. So is writing a short story or
even a short play with dialogue and action.
Just be sure to keep to a maximum of 1,500 words. There is, however, no
minimum.
The judging will be done by an independent panel of professional experts,
and they will be looking for the most creative entries. With substance
too, of course.
To ensure impartiality in the judging, the names of the participants will
not be made known to the panel. As such, you must make sure that your
name does not appear on any part of your entry. It should appear only in
the entry form, together with other required particulars and the title of
your entry.
Do take note that the title of your entry must also appear on every page
of your entry.
Entry forms are available in the printed edition of theSun and online at
www.sun2surf.com.
You can e-mail in your entries or send them by snail mail, but each entry
must be accompanied by an entry form.
All entries must reach the office of theSun no later than 6pm on July 29,
2011.
You can find out more about the competition in theSun newspaper or log on
to www.thesundaiy.my .
