In US Universities, there have been a lot of gift to Universities to endow a chair or donation towards the endowment.
This rarely happens in Malaysia, but when I read the newspaper this morning, it brighthened my day, to know that a fellow Malaysian has donated RM1 Million to UKM to endow a chair called Datin Miriam Mohd Yusoff Sustainable Governance Endowment Chair at the university’s Institute for Environment and Development (Lestari).

SEREMBAN: In keeping his promise to his father, businessman Datuk Ghazali Mohd Yusoff has donated RM1mil to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in her honour.
The Nusantara Technologies Sdn Bhd executive chairman said yesterday he was fulfilling a pledge to his father Datuk Mohamed Yusoff Ahmad, to take good care of his mother, Datin Miriam Mohd Yusoff.
“Before my father died in 1985, he told me to look after my mother. He also said I must share what Allah has given us with others,” he said in his speech during a ceremony to hand over the cheque to UKM Chancellor Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Ja’afar at Istana Hinggap here.
Miriam presented the cheque to Tuanku Ja'afar.
The donation was also done in conjunction with her 88th birthday, which fell on May 15.
The money will go towards the setting up of the Datin Miriam Mohd Yusoff Sustainable Governance Endowment Chair at the university’s Institute for Environment and Development (Lestari).
Lestari was set up in 1994 as a multidisciplinary institute to serve as a reference centre dealing with environmental and development issues.

Datin Miriam Mohd Yusoff Sustainable Governance Endowment Chair
JobStreet.com grew 41% in Revenue and 76% in Profit After Tax
JobStreet.com announced its 2008 1st Quarter results and the outcome is fantastic!
Revenue year-on-year has grown by 41% from RM17.9 Million to RM25.3 Million. This definitely gives great hope for JobStreet.com to surpass RM100 Million revenue mark for 2008.
In terms of Profit Before Taxation, it went up by 72% from RM7.1 Million to RM12.3 Million. For Profit After Taxation, it went up by 76% from RM6.4 Million to RM11.2 Million.
By any measure, this is a great achievement!
JobStreet.com also announced its dividend policy, where it would give back 33% to its shareholder.

Powernet - Search Engine for Wikipedia
Was reading The Edge this morning, and came across the column by Oon Yeoh in The Edge.
He talked about a new search engine called Powerset , which has great functionality in searching through wikipedia and it takes in Natural Search, eg: you can type, "Who is Oon Yeoh?", and you will get such responses as here .
Do try it out! It could be a good way for you to search through Wikipedia!

Thomas Cup vs China
After a gallant fight, finally, Malaysia's Thomas Cup team succumbed to a 2-3 loss. Personally, I think that we can walk away from Istora Senayan with pride, although we failed to join China and South Korea in the Thomas Cup final.
Lee Chong Wei managed to get the better of Lin Dan. That's definitely a good sign.
Our strategy to rest Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah, seemed does not work for the 1st Men Double. Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong lost to Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng.
After which, it is Wong Choong Hann's time to bring back the battle for Malaysia. However, he failed to reproduce the kind of spirited performance by Foo Kok Keong in 1992, to help Malaysia to overcome China.
Then, it comes the 2nd Men Double. Mohd Zakry and Mohd Fairuz won this crucial battle, but then Hafiz let us down. He lost quite tamely to Chen Jin.
It is a 2-3 and this is the 1st time Malaysia lost to China in Thomas Cup since the final in 1990. That's a record of 18 years that China has been trying to overcome. They lost to us 3 times in past Thomas Cup semi-finals.
Lets hope that our athlete would bounce back come Olympic Games in 3 months' time.

12,000 grants for SPM Top Scorers
KUALA LUMPUR: The Public Service Department (PSD) is offering 12,000 scholarships to outstanding students who sat the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination last year.
Of the total, 2,000 scholarships are offered under the foreign degree programme and another 10,000 under the local degree programme.
The list of successful applicants for the Foreign Degree Programme was posted on the PSD website on May 11.
Unsuccessful candidates have up to May 17 to submit their appeal online.
Of the 15,217 applicants who applied for scholarships under the foreign degree programme, 7,253 were called for interviews.
Selection was based on academic excellence (70 per cent), socio-economic background (10 per cent), performance at the interview (10 per cent) and co-curricular activities (10 per cent).
The PSD said that due to the limited number of scholarships available, a small number of academically-outstanding students was unsuccessful in its application.
However, students who gain admission to Ivy League-standard foreign universities would also be sponsored. Iinformation will be posted online at www.jpa.gov.my by early next month. Applications can also be made then.
Under the local degree programme, successful applicants will be sponsored to pursue diploma and degree courses in local institutions of higher learning.
It was announced yesterday that SPM holders are eligible for scholarships for diploma programmes. Those pursuing diploma, matriculation, Sijil Persekolahan Tinggi Malaysia and Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia are eligible for degree programme scholarships.
Applicants for the programme must have secured an admission to a degree programme, and will be judged on academic excellence (80 per cent) and socio-economic background (20 per cent).

A fair for accounting graduates
CPA Australia's one-day Career Market Day at the Mid Valley Exhibition Hall recently was a success. Over 1,600 job seekers used the opportunity to speak to representatives from renowned organisations taking part in the fair.
The Career Market Day was conceived to provide a platform for job seekers, particularly final year students and graduates to explore the breadth of career opportunities available in the accounting and finance arena.
Visitors had the opportunity to network and speak with senior executives, partners and human resource representatives from renowned organisations and thus giving them a good idea of latest employment market trends.
Eighteen exhibitors including first- and second-tier accounting firms, leading banks and multinationals took part in the fair.
These included Anuarul, Azizan, Chew and Co, BDO Binder, CIMB Group, Deloitte, Baker Tilly Monteiro Heng/Ferrier Hodgson MH Sdn Bhd, Folks DFK & /Azman, Wong, Salleh & Co, General Electric, HSBC Bank Malaysia Bhd, IBM Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Intel Malaysia.
Maybank Management, Associates and Scholarships head Hishamuddin Salleh said this was one of the most successful career fairs that the company had participated in.
"The fact that top notch employers participated in the fair showed the seriousness of the fair and the high quality candidates that it attracted.
"From the moment the doors opened in the morning until we closed, we had a steady stream of candidates. All 220 of our application forms were snapped up by 3pm," he said.
Jobstreet, which was the official job board partner for the Career Market Day, was also one of the exhibitors at the fair.
Jobstreet Marketing and Business Development vice-president Simon Si said because the fair was very niche, tailored for finance and accounting graduates, it helped get the right candidates.
At the Career Market Day, CPA Australia also launched the Malaysian chapter of the CPA Australia Employers Club and 16 organisations have already signed up.
CPA Australia Malaysia Division president Christina Foo said the global shortage of accountants was a very real issue that cuts across a broad spectrum of industries.
He added that armed with the right training and academic background, CPA Australia members have a high level of professionalism to offer to employers.

Top Colleges Dig Deeper in Wait Lists for Students

In what may be a happy surprise for thousands of high school seniors, Harvard plans to offer admission to 150 to 175 students on its waiting list, and Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania each expect to take 90, creating ripples that will send other highly selective colleges deeper into their waiting lists as well.
“This year has been less predictable than any recent year,” said Eric J. Kaplan, interim dean of admissions at Penn, adding that when one college in the top tier goes deep into its wait list, others are affected. “We all need to fill our classes and replace students who have been taken off wait lists at other institutions. The wait-list activity could extend for a significant time.”
Although colleges turn to wait lists to fill out their classes, it is unusual for the most selective to go so deep, college officials say.
For high-school students graduating in an unusually large class and for colleges trying to shape a freshman class, this has been an unusually challenging year, with the changes in early-admissions programs and the broad expansion of financial aid at many elite universities.
Right up until the May 1 deadline for students to respond to admissions offers, colleges have been unsure what to expect.
“Our class is coming in exactly the way we wanted it to, fitting into the plan we had to get to a class of 1,240,” said Janet Rapelye, dean of admission at Princeton, which, like Harvard and the University of Virginia, eliminated early admissions this year.
Ms. Rapelye said that with such a big change in policy, it was difficult to predict results, so “we deliberately aimed to have a slightly smaller group.”
In an e-mail message sent on Thursday to colleagues at dozens of other institutions and passed on to The New York Times, William Fitzsimmons, the Harvard College dean of admissions, said, “Harvard will admit somewhere in the range of 150 to 175 from the waiting list, possibly more depending on late May 1 returns and other waiting list activity.”
AHarvard spokesman said the college had accepted fewer students this year to avoid overcrowding the freshman class.
The Yale dean of admissions, Jeffrey Brenzel, said there would be about 45 wait-list offers this week and probably another round later this month.
Even colleges that had more than filled their freshman classes were wondering how many students would melt away if admitted off waiting lists elsewhere.
“We’re over target right now, so we’re in good shape,” said Rick Shaw, the Stanford dean of admissions. “But I’m keeping a small group on the wait list, because I think there’ll be some impact of wait-list activity at other schools.”
At Dartmouth, Maria Laskaris, the dean of admissions, said although Dartmouth had more than enough accepted students committing, she was “in a holding pattern, because it depends on what other schools do.”
“If they go deep into their wait lists,” Ms. Laskaris said, “there’s a domino effect that has an impact on all of us.”
Amherst College offered admission to 15 students on the wait list Wednesday and expected to make offers to about 10 more. Swarthmore and Pomona planned to take 15 to 20 students from the wait list, admissions officials said.
At Bowdoin College, William Shain said he was slightly over the 480-student target, “but not so much that going to the waiting list is out of the question, if we lost a lot to other schools.”
Some high school guidance counselors said the wait-list activity this year seemed to have occurred especially quickly.
“In the last few years, more and more kids have been getting put on wait lists,” said Margaret Loonam, assistant principal at Ridgewood High School in New Jersey. “Now we’re seeing more get off the wait lists and earlier. It used to be a formal letter.
“But this year, it’s still early May and we’ve had a kid who got a call at home at night saying, ‘You’re off the wait list, do you want to come?’ We’ve already had kids get off waitlists at N.Y.U., B.U., Fairfield and Quinnipiac.”
At the University of Virginia, which also ended early admissions this year, John Blackburn, the dean of admission, said because he had received 3,200 deposits for a target of 3,170 freshman, he might not go to the wait list, unless an unusual number of students defect to other colleges.
Mr. Blackburn said he considered the move from early admissions a success because it seemed that, as hoped, it had brought in more low-income students.
Harvard, which ended early admissions this year and greatly expanded its financial aid to middle-income families, sent out offers of admissions to 1,948 students March 31, for a freshman class that is to number 1,650. Harvard would not say how many students had accepted the admissions offers.

US Global Undergraduate Exchange Program

And today, I got a pleasant surprise. A fellow ReComer from my alma mater also, Jit Sin High School shared with me the good news of being selected for the program above. His/her twin sister was also selected!
Very happy to hear that they were both offered to spend 1 year in US fully under scholarship. While they do not find out the info from my blog, nevertheless I'm happy that they got it! Congrats!

Brand's Sudoku Asia Pacific Open
I would be in Singapore on 12th July 2008.... I know that's another 2 more months, and it is not my 1st trip there. So, what's the fuss?...
Nothing big, but it is going to be my first real competition outside of Malaysia for an interesting Math games, called...... Sudoku... Guess, many of you have been playing Sudoku a lot too, so if you are around Singapore, do come by ViVoCity on 12th July afternoon 2pm to 6pm.
It is the Brand's Asia Pacific Sudoku Open. It is going to be a tall order for me to win anything, but guess, I am trying my very best!

Congrats to all the fellow ReComers who have successfully gotten JPA Scholarships! Happy for you all, but I would like to really request that all of you, do come back to share at ReCom.org! I am not sure whether any of you benefit from what you learn through ReCom.org, but I really hope that you could help to contribute towards the sharing within ReCom.org! This would help other students in learning, especially for future years! Do definitely hope to see more ReComers to key in their particulars at ReCom Scholarship InfoBase , so that other students can benefit from it.

Past Year SPM Trial Exams
For those of you who are looking for past year SPM Trial Exams throughout the country (including MRSM etc), Edoovel has provided a platform for students to share and download those past year papers. It would be useful for all of you who are looking for those resources!
And if you have any trial papers, do submit to them, so that it could be shared with others. This is consistent with the sharing and learning culture, we have been promoting through ReCom.org - The Worldwide Malaysian Students Network

JPA Overseas Scholarships SPM 2007 Batch
2008 JPA Scholarships for SPM 2007 has been announced late 10th May 2008 (Saturday).
There have been a lot of students who have managed to lay their hands on the 2,000 JPA Overseas Scholarships.

MACEE-AMCHAM Scholarships to Study in US

American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) and the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE) are pleased to announce the competition for the AMCHAM-MACEE 2008 Scholarship. AMCHAM created a scholarship endowment program in 1998 to benefit deserving Malaysian students seeking to pursue their undergraduate studies in the United States. The AMCHAM-MACEE 2008 Scholarship annually awards a US$20,000 scholarship, covering four years of undergraduate study in the United States. The scholarship is open to qualified Malaysian students who are accepted to an accredited university in the United States for four years of study culminating in a Bachelors degree. The student must be accepted for Fall semester, 2008.
