Alexa Ranking for Homegrown Malaysia and Singapore Companies

Thanks to Jiin Joo for highlighting on this Alexa Ranking for Malaysian and Singaporean homegrown companies. For the Malaysian ones, it was done by Guan Sin , a fellow Malaysian working in Singapore.

Lifting it from both the sites above.

For Malaysian side, online news dominate, with banking, job search (Yay!, Search Engine, E-Commerce sites dominate.

For Singaporean side, bank, telco, mobile entertainment, gambling, adult entertainment, street directory, university etc dominate.

(Quoted from Guan Sin's site)
I have decided to compile a top-20 homegrown Malaysian sites based on Alexa ranking, by omitting those sites which are operated by American/European based Internet giants. This left us with the list as follows (original Alexa ranks for Malaysia in parenthesis): (12)
The Star Online (13) (17)
Utusan Online (18)
Cari Malaysia (23) (24) (25) (27)
Lowyat.NET (29)
AirAsia Berhad (30) (31) (32) (33) (34) (40)
Sports Toto (52) (53)
New Straits Times Online (61) (65)
ChinaPress 中國報 (67)

(Quoted from Jiin Joo's site)
Not very surprising to me. How about a look at Singapore’s ranks as well (done 2nd October): (17) (19) (23)
Singnet (27) (35) (37) [warning: PG18] (38)
National University of Singapore (45)
Singapore Cable Vision (47)
ChannelNewsAsia (48)

For those who thought that Google has the monopoly as far as search engines are concerned, well, think again. Though Google is still at the top, it has started receiving competition from various quarters albeit at a smaller scale. Alexa is one search engine that was thought to give some competition to Google in some quarters of the world. On the lines of Alexa and Google Trends, Complete, Inc has come up with Snapshot. Snapshot is thought to be much more accurate then Alexa but there are certain limitations that might thwart the popularity of Snapshot. Firstly, in Snapshot one can compare only three sites. Secondly, sites with less that 10000 uniques are excluded and thirdly, this is available only for the US audience. These three limitations still keep Google the favorite followed by Alexa.
